why is bounce so slow?

Why does bounce take so long? I can do a normal high detail lighting of my map in under an hour. When I use bounce though, it taked forever. I left it overnight once and after nine hours it still hadn’t finished the first bounce (it was up to …8 of the illuminate raw lightmap stage).

I know radiosity is a very slow process, but nine times slower?

I could use fast bounce, but I was hoping to get a fairly realistic lighting of my level.

ADDED:

I tried using fastbounce and for some reason ALL the lighting on the level appeared to use light enveloping. The whole level was about 50% darker even though I specified only fastbounce not fast. Is that a bug or can fastbounce only work if you use fast lighting too?

It’s slow because it’s like having to calculate the lighting all over again several times.

Yeah I know that, but nine times as long?

Yes.

I did have a problem with -bounce compile never finishing not long ago. I recall it was something to do with an md3 model I’d made in my map and it wasn’t correctly UV mapped. Can’t say it was this for sure but when I took it out of the map it compiled fine.

Just a thought if you’ve been making your own models or using someone else’s md3s

Ah, that might be the problem. I might give that a test some time as I have several of my own MD3s in the map.
