This is correct. You tap the button to go into a standard sprint, and hold it down to let the game know you want SMART over/under stuff.

There are an infinite number of variations for the intentionally vague scenario i described, lets not get into detailed ones made up by your own mind, but one of mine. For instance, i could have ran around a corner, or strafed around one while holding shift and reloading. And my target could have been really close, while my reload animation is cancelled by an unwanted animation, and i’m flatfooted because of the interrupted clibing animation, he kills me. You could argue that i need to be looking up to climb the wall, then i’d say what if i was? What if i took a quick peek at whos shooting at me from above. See what im saying? You need to be able to do more than one thing at one particular time. Why not have the smart button be a seperate button?
I’m a fast player. You wont know what hit you. And that is part of why you cant have nice things.
For me to be awsome like that, i will be pressing keys to the left and right, sprinting and doing all kinds of finger acrobatics, and chances are i will eventually end up climbing when i should be killing you for the 112’th time. And thats where the option to “turn it off” comes in. As i recall the devs said you can turn off the automatic smart button. That is what me, and the other monsterrific players will do.
Finally, i’m not fiesty at all. I just like to think i’m a very good player. Why does that bother you so much. Maybe you’re a bit feisty eh?

Depending on game the I sometimes prefer to hold to sprint, and then use SMART on a different button altogether.

I’m quite aware of… err… acrobatics. I’ve been defragging on Q3 for 10 years, tricked on RtCW, ET and ETQW. Bar air/ground accel in Q3, to a lesser extent RtCW/ET, great limitations and air drag in ETQW… you won’t be going faster then me
