Why does everyone hate dome?

(Coritch) #1

Now I have read about (though not noticed) poor optimisation as an annoying factor, but it’s got one of the more diverse ranges of ways to play and is in my opinion a well made map.

For example it starts with an area of large open spaces with the objectives and choke points in closer more enclosed spaces. Even the delivery point is lowered to seclude it and offer a range of tactical options (though most people I see just jump straight down, even on defence). It then goes to an objective which requires the defending team to split their attention, and has many side-paths to get around by. But it puts the points in more dangerous large open spaces, and once a charge is planted, that split attention can focus on disarming the charge, meaning the open area becomes even more dangerous for offenders. And the final point isn’t open, but allows for attack from a wide variety of angles. But of course whenever the attackers split up to make use of these angles they take the risk of mis-coordinating, or simply being picked off by defenders who aren’t necessarily dealing with your teammates due to the large amount of cover. And then when the bomb is planted this setup is reversed as the defenders pile in to defuse it.

There are sight-lines for snipers, but also a range of tight corridors, and there is a mixture of open air and enclosed areas on a ratio like that of trainyard. It allows for a variety of approaches for any class.

So why is it that no one votes for Dome? Or when they do most people leave the server? Is the optimisation really that bad? Am I missing something? Or does everyone like dome and I’m just caught in some freak anomaly where I happen to never get to play it?

A: Dome is barely (if at all) optimized. I lose about 30 frames when I play on dome.

B: Dome feels forced. Only a few of the trickjumps are actually useful in practical gameplay.

C: Dome is largely imbalanced. If either team is even slightly better than the other, you end up with a roll or a stomp.

B and C are opinions. You may disagree.

Item A does it for me… :frowning:

I love playing on dome, but its too hard to defend the first two objectives, and too easy to defend the final

(Orivar) #5

You cant play 6v6 on that map. It just doesnt feel right to run from place to place ALL over the match. (aka Running Simulator).

(TheStrangerous) #6

It has to be first impressions, back when this map had disorienting routes.

Even though I enjoy it, there’s a lot of wasted space around the map, feeling like it’s dragged on.

(BlackboltLW) #7

The performance is still my main issue (probably due to map size but, eh)

Aesthetically speaking, the map is quite dull, everything basically looks the same, and too many unused space and route. Also if you not used to the map, it’s pretty disorienting

(hoyes) #8

I feel that the map is a bit too large, that there is too much running to the objective rather than actual gunfights. Also the optimisation is an issue, but it is getting fixed.

(X-aited) #9

this.
I don’t like the layout of objective(s) 1 and 2.
Objective 1 has two completely different ways to go on completely different sides. This result in more sneaky deliverys than actuall fights. - i still can deal with it
Objective(s) 2 is in my opinion just bad. 2 different Objective of which only 1 need to be destroyed… wtf?
Objective 3 is relativly good

Still. The map is too big. Not even sure its size is good enough for 8v8. I could imagine some flags, like in terminal first Objective, could cover up the problem.

(If this map could be changed i would like to see Obj. 1 and 2 to be replaced with an EV Objective and Objective 3 will be changed to 2 deliverys. Bascialy a copy of Chapel)

(sgtCrookyGrin) #10

I’ve enjoyed Dome for what it offered. Flanks.

There are many areas that offer flanking opportunities, that’s why I like it mostly.

(JJMAJR) #11

Objective 1 can be defended to complete lockdown with the proper setup. It’s because of this that the amount of carryables was changed to one from two.

Objective 2 is basically added time for the attackers.

Objective 3 can also be locked down by the defenders, again with a proper setup.

The main problems with the map is the amount of wasted space, lack of optimization, and this last issue I’ll bring up.

When I say lockdown, I mean a completely impenetrable fortress, with nothing promised aside from death towards any sperm cell that tries to penetrate the ghastly world of that map’s womb that is the first and third objectives.

It’s because that the defending players pretty much could wrap the objective, focusing fire into a very small area in order to destroy any chance for attackers to complete a push.

(BananaSlug) #12

i like the map, but like people above said, there is too much useless stuff, we also have 2 maps in 1 which is cool imo, but 5v5 on dome is just stupid

(kamido) #13

frame rate drop is main issue for me.
lots of running from point A to B especially from spawn to where the actions are.

i would say pubs don’t like complex map, they prefer rail shooting where they don’t have to care much about other route than the main road (chapel).

i do like the map have lots of flanking route to take, almost too much that many of them are unused.

i actually hate trainyard more than dome, not sure if anyone share the same feeling as mine.

(ImSploosh) #14

People keep talking about unused routes, but Dome really doesn’t have THAT many routes. They’re all used. The only one that isn’t used is the route to the right side for attackers in the beginning. It would be used if it had a purpose. It doesn’t get you anywhere and is only helpful if you’re completely trapped in the spawn.

To make that route useful, it could lead across the way and onto the middle buildings? Or maybe something like that.

Personally, I feel like Dome would benefit from more useful routes/jumps and less invisible walls. How about opening up the middle on the first objective? Not a straight shot, but maybe add jumps, some twists and turns. Grant access to the building, up to the top. Adding secondary objective(s) as well?

Dome has so much potential still, but it just suffers from optimization and needs an update to its design. Help from the community would probably make it a perfect map. Dockyard really took a step up from Dome, but I’m almost 100% sure they will or already have ruined Dockyard by removing routes, limiting areas, and ultimately making it linear.

What we need are maps that are essentially playgrounds. Give us an area with a bunch of objects/sightlines/buildings or whatever. Make everything accessible. Leave it up to the players to decide their approaches to each objective. Allow players to do whatever they want as they progress through the map - not just approach say an EV through one particular road.

Hell, the current maps could be updated to implement this. Invisible walls are the ultimate killers. Let’s bring it back to when there weren’t so many restrictions as to how a player plays. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t want those awesome structures to just be pretty sights; I want them to be my personal jungle gym.

(inscrutableShow) #15

Late to the party, but I hate Dome because I’ve never played a complete match on it. Ever. Every time it gets chosen, my PC has a seizure and stops. I run on bottom line settings, too.

I totally agree with C. I like Dome but I feel like it’s a bit unfair to someone with a slightly worse team.

(The_True_mo) #17

So far dome is the best map, only one that offers multiple ways to obj, and is great fun since most of the fights are not a 100% clusterfucks.

(bgyoshi) #18

It’s just too damn big. If they kept all the routes but cut all the distances in half the map MIGHT be a reasonable size. But as it stands, it just takes way too damn long to run from spawn to point and it forces already small teams to split up, which is a bad idea in this game.

Honestly this map would be sick in like 16v16

(Indefinite) #19

Nothing wrong with Dome.

Most DB players still don’t even have a remote grasp of how to play well and it pronounces itself on Dome.
