Why do we have squads, anyway?

When the teams are separated, the top team is Attackers and the bottom team is Defenders. Since teams are randomly scrambled each time (I would believe so) in Objective mode, it is impossible to tell if you will attack or defend until the merc slots are locked in.

In Stopwatch, however, the teams are formed in the lobby with the same setup, but considering that you will be both attacking and defending in the same game, knowing which side you will be on is kind of pointless.
Being forced to play only 3 mercs in your squad means people often can’t choose the right merc for the situation. You get games where there is a lack of medics or engineers. Also often players have 1 or 2 mercs in their squad just because of missions they have to fill.

I’ve played Overwatch beta and there you can switch to any hero. Why don’t we do this in DB too? Just be able to switch to a preferred merc whenever needed. Without having squads.
In design it’s referred to as having the player make a meaningful choice. You plan ahead of time which adds another layer of skill to the game and helps determine the outcome. Tons of games use a similar style because it works.

OW is a completely different style of game and it was also it was custom built from the ground up with the idea that any character can be picked at any time. So not only the engine was built with that in mind but the gameplay too. UE3/DB is virtually impossible to do the same thing with without heavy engine re-writes. And the gameplay isn’t designed around it either. The devs have talked about on numerous occasions the idea of using a ban system to further require players to know multiple characters and to plan ahead of time. So it’s a conscious choice to limit mercs to a squad AND it’s also simply a technical limitation that wouldn’t be easy to overcome.

Well, I always play:

1.Fire Support

2.Engineer

3.Medic

Simply because that’s what I’m good at. Sometimes I’ll bring a sniper if I’m in that mood. Fire supports are often useful outside of EV maps, for clearing out areas, and, y’know, calling in supporting fire. Explosions from the sky are often useful, even when you don’t kill any one. You’ll say “But they can just move, and avoid the explosion.” Well, yeah. They moved. They’re gone for a second. That creates an opening in the crossfire for your slayers to move up.

This is an excellent reason why you have squads. If you could play any given merc at any given time, you could just cycle between Skyhammer, Arty, Kira, and Stoker, thereby circumventing cooldown. Same with medics. K for suicide to switch between the best suited medic for that moment. The same an apply to any class. If you aren’t forced to play the merc you brought along, you’ll never learn versatility with any of them. You’ll just play one merc in one situation and then switch to another. Yes, some mercs are better at some things than others, but when you have to make do, it creates a level of improvisation that is a lot more fun than just doing the same thing with the same merc over and over again.

I’d argue we could have 5 merc slots for each group (Assault, Engies, Recons/Saboteurs, Medics, Fire support). Like in a classic class based shooter. Each fulfilling their role.

But so far, 3 merc squad is fine.

Are you trying to tell me my squad is bad? PDP is the best weapon and Stilnotto is a really good melee and the Deagle and Revolvers are really good secondaries

But the real question is, were you contributing? If so, then the real question is were you really switching between three characters that do the same thing?

Overwatch is designed the way that you need to play all heroes. DB isn’t. That’s why DB is better imo. You can specialize. You have a team that can do stuff for you you can’t. And if you happen to have no medics, you win the game without medics. It’s possible and not even that hard. I did it, and I’m fairly bad.

Err OW is a different game where you absolutely need all the heroes, but you have three spot if you take a medic and an engineer in those you have the two most essential already

My team comp for pubs is pretty much always

 • Nader
 • Someone with a Burst Rifle, Assault Rifle, or Machine Gun
 • A gimmicky character (Vasilli, Phantom, Rhino)

But when it comes to comp, I tend to go

 • Nader/Fragger/Thunder/Rhino
 • Sawbonez/Sparks
 • Arty/Proxy
