Why do people use different huds/configs?

(ArtGutFallen) #1

I’ve never really seen the point to using a different hud/config in DB, I feel that the default hud is great and works for me.

(JesseKomm) #2

Exactly that; it’s what works for you, but it doesn’t work for everyone. It’s all about preference.

(XavienX) #3

Exactly, people have opinions.

Objective specialists don’t need health status bars on their hud (and currently, ammo support don’t need health status bars either; what they need is ammo status).

(Derpfestor) #5

I just keep mine at default since it’s what works for me. My play style varies from situation to situation, and the default setting of the HUD gives me everything I need whenever I change from one merc to another.

I want everything in one place so I don’t have to look in 3 screen corners.

(Ghosthree3) #7

Why do I keep tabs on the bottom and others moved to tabs on top?

I use the config I do because I like having a smooth FPS with no hitching during fights. I use the HUD that I do because I want to be able to center a lot of information and not have key info spread between the corners of the screen. Having that info in a centralized location that is still near your crosshair helps significantly.

I do not like the default HUD of DB at all. It seems as though it was made by a person who was trying to maximize the viewing area for the central part of the screen. Making it aesthetically pleasing but functionally awful for anybody trying to view information without taking their focus away from key areas. I understand what the designer was going for but I’m a person who prefers function over form.

2D designers shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions any more. All they’ve done is fuck things up world web wide for the last 7 years.

Sadly it’s not only the web anymore - the new trend in software UI is to flatten everything. So now you have to play a game of “is it a label or is it a button”…

(Ghosthree3) #11

Kind of what I was getting at yeah. It’s not ‘new’ though, it’s been around for quite some time now. It’s disgusting and the only reason I can imagine they keep doing it for is that it must be cheap as chips to design.

Neither do I. How would I go about changing it? (Visual elements as well as layout)

You go here, C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\my games\UnrealEngine3\ShooterGame\Config and you open up ShooterUI.ini.

Go to the section called [ShooterGame.SGUIHUDPlayer] and modify what you want. There is also a DB site that will let you do all of this visually but I’ve not used it or know if it works with the most recent update. It looks like a lot but it’s pretty simple once you start messing with it. The alignments make it easy to quickly position in areas of the screen then you use PixelOffset to specifically set locations.

Mess with one element and you’ll get the hang of it quickly. There is also other settings that are useful. For example m_bUseRotatingMap=false is what I have set which stops that damn minimap from rotating (hate that). By default it’s set to true. You can also get rid of the minimap as well.
