Why do I need to use Imgur to upload image?

(Tanker_Ray) #1

Might be a dumb question for you guys, but I’m still not used to foreign forums.

As I used to visit Korean sites often, due to my nationality, I can’t understand why western internet sites like Reddit or this forum doesn’t have self-image upload system, because I never used this… Imgur image uploading way before.(Almost all Korean sites support image upload systems)

I took a lot of screen shots, like funny, godlike moments or my stats, but I just can’t upload it here…

Why do I need to upload my image at the other site called Imgur, and type? this… Image URL? here?

can someone explain this to me?

I am sorry to ask this kind of questions… I’m just not accustomed to it.

Are you asking why the forum doesn’t do image hosting? A few reasons probably:

why bother dealing with storage and compatibility issues when someone else can do it
overflow exploits where someone can upload a picture that isn’t a picture

imgur is pretty easy to use and even gives you the BB code to paste directly into your post.

Well… you already answered your own question. “This site does not have a self-image upload system” it really is that simple. Why they don’t implement one for the forum is an entirely different question that only the devs can answer. it really isn’t hard to use imgur though… takes like 10 seconds to do it.

the BB code that all forums I’ve ever seen are based on only does file hosting without distinguishing between the file types. Almost every forum switches it off because it’s easy to spread viruses like that.
Instead, if you are uploading your images to external specialists, they can cover for virus infected files like they already do, and save the forums a bunch of headaches. Especially since BB code already includes the code for external images.
It’s just the way the software template is set up. And it works so why change it and complicate everything.
And you don’t HAVE to use imgur. Any image on the internet works. The url just needs to end in an image file.

Curious that Korean forums don’t do it that way, really.

ohh so you can upload other’s image? like, when I upload my image… to my account, someone can use my image’s BBcode(? not sure what this is) to upload at other site? I see.

well, I was just curious why do I have to use two sites for just uploading image. thanks!

BB code is the name of the code all western forums use. It’s a template. If you go around you’ll see that beneath the obvious looks, a lot of forums work the same way. That’s because they’re using the BB code template https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

Well I don’t really know those… exact way, but Korean forums does allow you to just upload your image from your hard drive straight. Like, simply desktop image or so. I never used Imgur or other sites just for uploading images.

So this BB code? much simple than just uploading chunk of image file huh… Thanks!

But Imgur is very good, I know you’re not used to me and neither am I. But with Imgur, you can make albums and all that. Like make album for funny moments, or for Aces, etc. And plus you’ll be able to share it with anyone at anytime, just send them the link to the pictures, etc, you want them to see.

it’s just the way this forum is set up, bbcode is formatting message boards use. Some forums have image uploads

(Tanker_Ray) #10

Well I was just curious about ALL sites, not just this forum. I signed up Imgur right now, but Imgur is somehow very slow, so I’m having hard time using it now… I don’t know why, but takes so much time to upload images. May be I have to seek other way to upload image…

anyway, thanks for reply man!

(Jostabeere) #11

Because the forum gets filled with data of all the pictures and need more space.
And this makes the forum slower. And heavier.

If you need help with BBCode, this cool guy named gg2ez posted a neat little guide: link
