why are there no vehicles?

(ForsakenCheese) #1

Hey guys,

I was just curious if there we going to be seeing vehicles at all like in ETQW? I really loved the direction you guys went with ETQW, but this game just feels like Brink 2.0 or more like TF2 rush modes where you’re just protecting an object.

I did some searching and couldn’t find anything about vehicles being added, and it looks like its not on your roadmap.

Is there any hope for bigger, less static, and linear maps? I really enjoyed having an entire arsenal of vehicles to roam around maps with as it allowed me to diversify my style of playing the game when I wanted to change.

Infantry -> do something different -> fly ship -> do something different -> drive tank.

I agree, lets add tanks and flyers

I would love to see a futuristic Apache helicopter like in Battlefield 3. I long to strafe the chopper and see the rotor blades chop up the enemies while letting the chain guns roar through an entire spawn wave. Please implement this!

(Valdez) #4

can we add some water maps and maybe get some battleships going? i really think this would take it to the next level.

(slaG) #5

Thats a pretty unique take on vehicles. I often have played these games and dont understand why the moving parts dont do damage. The chopper blades would be really cool!

(LeeStyle) #6

Just think of the coordination that would be required to land my apache chopper on your battleship. Now we’re taking things to the next level.

Ever since mario brothers for nes I havent played a really good water level game. Maybe we can all have scuba gear and have underwater objectives where we need to defuse mines so the subs can pass through.

no, just no. Not only do we not have we not have weapons to take them down its hard enough to cover all the directions on the map let alone getting people dropped behind us

I long for the days when playing infantry was meaningless and getting annihilated every 7 seconds from random vehicle #17’s neutron blaster was the highlight of my evening.

Who wouldn’t want to log into a server and see this http://i.imgur.com/ztSID.jpg?

But since it’s Free 2 Play that means we’ll be able to purchase missile silos to combat the air superiority that will be established.

Battlefield 3’s new DLC is going to have motorcycles. Since this is the future, I think we can do one better and get some sort of hovercraft bikes going…Or, dare I say, hoverboards themselves?!

2/10 guys, come on you can troll better than that.

I say that they add the magic carpet, so people can fly around and have a magic genie come out and granted wishes of more land minds turrets and other spam.

They better not give me a Segway otherwise I’ll be really tear’n it up… until I hit stairs :(.

“alladin” bighogins brings it to the point, maybe a magic lamp were teammates can jump in, and wait until you get released, you can drink a cup of coffee in the meantime.^^ bighogins +1
but im afraid the gameplay with the ev would make no sense anymore ^^
I have to say, this alpha plays a lot smoother than BF3 patched after the 6th big patch?

Every normal player that i know has stopped playing this game sooner or later. So much to “great” vehicles. I think it carries much of balancing issues. Still 90 per cent of the BF3 population are playing infs (most supporter with c4, claymores or sniper both waiting in a corner over hours), since there is only ONE chopper TWO jets, 2-3 tanks on a 64 player map, some c4 jeeps^^ And still jet or helicopter can rule them all.

You really want to become DB sort of this, do you? IMHO bf3 destroyed my dream of great vehicular combat, and i was always a big fan of vehicles when this game released :frowning:

i think this game feels like some Enemy territory game^^

I see it this way: in the past there was always this engine limit of having large open area maps. Now game design kinda worked around this limit and it has defined how levels look and feel. But over the last years there was some improvements in this regard. Hardware improved, so did engine software. To come to the point: i think this is something people need to wake up to, kind of a thing where you have to realize that it once was an actual barrier, so you worked around it and made a great life of it anyway, but now that barrier has been silently removed, but we still live in that world, because we are used to it. This means that for example all the patterns we applied to old games suddenly are expandable, and so larger maps can be created which scale well. This in turn means larger area to walk, which in turn requires vehicles to get from point A to B quicker.

But DB is not open area based, so this is no point. Would be interesting to see though how Enemy Territory principles such as for example escorting a truck or stealing something are implemented in large open space worlds. Would still be awesome. ETQW was a milestone in this regard imo.

But i could be totally wrong and maybe people like small space linear maps more. Hard to say, since it is also a matter of habit and long-term practice with smaller maps. Also not all small maps in the past were linear, i am exagerating

A objective driven vehicle gameplay offers APB: Reloaded, is pretty fun played it for over 200 hours^^ but the game had its, well… bad idiosyncrasies.

(Violator) #18

No OP flyers please :). I do like the vehicles in ET:QW but I don’t see how they would work in DB as there is nothing currently to effectively counter them (ie a noobtube). I also don’t see the argument for technology being the reason why everything has to be large open area - millions of people still like the play chess. Also from a mapping point of view massive maps are a massive amount of work (see how few we had for QW compared to W:ET).

Vehicle aren’t likely to happen with our current plans.

At some point way down the line we might feel they are worth adding but right now we’re focussed on infantry combat
