Why are there no casual 5vs5 server?

Can someone explain to me, why there are no casual 5vs5 server. You know, the mod the game was designed for in terms of map size, weapons and mercs? I mean right now with the absence of ranked and private matches you are not even able to play the game the way it is intented to. Doesn’t that bother anyone, that all SD is offering us is a non ideal version of their game?

And even when ranked and private matches are back. People start out on public/casual servers. Which are so different from how the game is supposed to be. (Everyone who ever tried out rank a bit just must know the difference). Yes, 8vs8 can be fun, because it is complete mayhem. But is that the way Dirty Bomb should go?

At least 50% of the casual servers should be 5vs5, so that this becomes the standard and everything above is more for the mayhem aspect.

In my opinion, casual 5vs5 servers, dunno about FF on because of trolls, would be a first step to repopulate ranked. And an active ranked scene is so important for the longevity of the game.

I’m guessing this was not implemented in order to decrease the amount of servers that would need to be active in order to accommodate players.

Example.

100 5v5 servers can only hold 1,000 players.
100 6v6 servers can only hold 1,200 players.

@Black Good point. But do you know, would they need more servers if they switch half of them to 5vs5? Just from how many players they currently have vs how many spots on servers.

replace 8v8 with 5v5 imo
i dont play 8v8 because its pure spamfest , but i would love to play 5v5

Really think that is an excellent idea BananaSlug.

I think they should remove 6v6, everyone plays that because they want 5v5, some people (100% lunatics) like 8v8, I don’t think it should be completely removed

(Pumpkiller) #7

This makes zero sense to remove 6v6,especially when it’s the closest thing to ranked in casual.
Besides, i don’t think anyone is prepared to get spawncamped 100% of the time. @Dysfnal

Seems like 9/10 people like 6v6 and 9/10 people think 8v8 is cancer.

To remove 6v6 instead of 8v8 makes no sense eh.

The game doesn’t work well with 8v8. It should never have been a thing in the first place imo.

8v8 is pure mayhem and not in a good way! I used to like it as a newb though for some reason.

6v6 can get a bit quiet. I sometimes run out of people to shoot at for an ace.

7v7 is just right for me

The thing with 5v5 is that less skilled players can’t cover every route on every map. For example, on the last 1/3 of Chapel, there are 3 main routes, the right side which goes up a ramp, the middle, which goes through the stairwell, and the left side, which drops you by the bridge. In a 6v6, you can at least get 2 people on each entrance if you communicate and space players correctly, but with a 5v5 one side will always have less players running it.

With 6v6, 7v7, or 8v8, you can more adequately cover each route and, as such, fill the map more, which allows newbies to better practice as they have more targets and less of them are likely to immediately spot them and gun them down. That said, I agree we don’t need as many 8v8 servers because most of them just go unfilled anyways, but people like myself still enjoy 8v8 matches for reasons such as how it’s harder to wipe out the entire team with one grenade or airstrike because the players are more likely to be spread across the map than congested in one area.

6v6 is still its own separate thing, however, and it would be a bit negligent to remove it entirely, instead of just reallocating some of the servers(which are usually empty) to be used as 5v5s.

The problem I see with 7vs7 and 8vs8 is that they completely change the way the game is played.

It is just a huge difference between 5 people defending the choke points of the first objective on bridge and 8.

Defending in Chapel with 3-4 Artys/Skyhammers is just something that was never supposed to happen

Flanking doesnt work as it should, because when you suprise someone who would be otherwise alone in a 5vs5, meaning you could take an advantagous position, in 8vs8 there is not a single guy but 3. So you kill 1-2 and you die.

Tactics and maneuvers from casual 5vs5 would help you in ranked. But as it is right now, that just doesnt happen, because you just have to think and act differently and that is such a huge problem for transitioning from casual to ranked. Because when you start to play ranked your experience is so limited. With 5vs5 server you would have a huge pool of knowledge you gained by just casually playing the game.

The only reason I like 8vs8 is because all my guys have AoE abilities

I’ve always had this gripe. It makes no sense at all to promote a competitive format and try to encourage players to play a 5v5 format without letting them play it casually first. The mechanics of 5v5 and 8v8 are night and day, and even the mechanics of 5v5 and 6v6 are quite different. They’re closer, but having the one extra player significantly alters viable team composition.

I say get rid of every mode except 5v5. Although, to be honest, I would be perfectly fine keeping 6v6 servers, but I really don’t ever play 7v7 and 8v8 anymore because of how spammy they are. The game maps are just too small to support a fun 7v7 or 8v8 game.

Here’s a thought.

Alongside introducing 5v5 pubs, DB should shamelessly lend system OW has shamelessly borrowed last time (who knows what was the first title to introduce such); class composition suggestions.

Been suggested a lot (and ye there is lot of gray areas such as C4 Obj Attack which doesnt 100% require Engineer etc.) having a friendly reminder at lobby, that “Consider more Medics” if only 1 person has med in squad or “Consider less Recons” when theres a fella with Phanty, Poopeye and Vaseline all together wasting space, and so forth.

System doesnt even need to go all the way into match, as long as lobby reminds of healthy composition. Maybe it could suggest something about most “crucial” roles medics, fire support and engineers. Assaults and recons are definitely needed and useful, but in pub plays often 3 first mentioned are enough get stuff done.

What would also help in the issue of class composition in pubs (oh and ranked too), least how I see it, is having clear indications what merc is which role. Hell if I’d get an euro for every time I need to explain someone that Vassili and Phantom are part of same class category or that Skyhammer is NOT an Assault… somethingsomething billionare. ET used signs for class icons and it worked like a charm, even if there was only 1 soldier per role, shouldn’t be too hard to implement anyway.

Coz you’know, even densest bot-like motherhumper should get a warning bell ringing in between their 2 brain cells when their entire team has sniper scope icons next to their merc pictures and not a single medic cross in sight.
