Which objective specialist merc should I hire?

(JRMC) #1

I want to have a roster of mercs designated for various purposes. I’m currently running with Aura, Skyhammer and Vasilli. I know this sounds like a very basic loadout, but I actually also have Phoenix. A regrettable purchase compared to Aura, in my opinion. - But that’s besides the point.

I want to know, from the three available objective specialist mercs, which one should I hire?

Having said that, on to the engineers bit.

Though opinions will always differ, Fletcher is by far the most threatening Objective Specialist, because when played correctly, he’s as strong as an actual assault merc.
His sticky bombs are very powerful when dropped right, but it requires a bit of practise to know when to use them, and how to use them. He’s not the easiest pick, but has a high skill ceiling if you are able to aim fast and walljump well.

Proxy is a very fast merc with access to either very powerful shotguns, or the pinpoint accurate hochfir. Her speed comes with low HP, however, so it’s imperative that you’re able to aim well while on the move. Mines can guarantee a kill in some spots, and when you get better, you can even use mines as a poor man’s grenade by throwing it and firing at it immediately.

Bushwhacker has some of the best SMG’s and a bit more health, but sacrifices speed. His turret is not as impressive as you might think from encounters on the receiving end. Though he is kinda nice if your own aim isn’t as good, I think most people will be disappointed with the lack of utility and speed on Bushwhacker.

My personal preference is Proxy, with Fletcher on close second. I like the speed and the ability to boobytrap reinforcement routes. She’s the merc I’d recommend, though most will argue that Fletcher is better.

Don’t worry. I haven’t played him in a while. I also kind of regret it.

I don’t understand the hate on Vasilli. After I started playing him, he quickly became my strongest merc. I almost never loose when playing Vasilli. There are ofcourse some maps/situations were I prefer other mercs, or if my team need a strong engineer or medic I will play that, but Vasilli can shut down huge parts of maps like no one else can, and is in my opinion the easiest merc to wipe out the whole enemy team with (unless you get in a lucky airstrike or something).

Not really.
A -good- Vassili can make massive dents in enemy waves and indeed, lock down entire areas. Unfortunately, by far most Vassilis couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn and essentialy get ignored.

It’s far more important to hold the inside of an area, to have actual presence. If a Vassili doesn’t pick off enough people before they head around the corner, the defending team essentially has one player less. Even if someone’s not that good and easily gets pushed over, he still serves are distraction, depletes the enemy’s ammo, opens up opportunities to flank, etc.

A Vassili that just camps a ramp is usually a waste of a player slot.

Most new players gravitate towards Vassili so they don’t have to deal with the frontline slaughter, while they’re in fact not helping. Even if they do get a positive K/D, it doesn’t offset the lack of utility and lack of actual cover. It’s a noob trap. Worse yet, it teaches them all the wrong behaviours in this game.

Bit of a TL;DR for Matuno’s above post: Most Vassilis suck. Simple fact. If you don’t suck, go for it, yay you. It’s just that most new players (myself included) buy Vassili as their first unlock, thinking “Oooh, sniper, I’m good with sniper in COD or whatever”, and then waste thirty thousand creds that they could have spent on Sawbonez or Arty or Proxy, all of which are relatively easy to use mercs.

Fletcha.

Fletcher requires a high level of skill.

(Thai-San) #9

Fletcher is the strongest of the three. But don’t be that guy and get another one

(DexterGrif) #10

Proxy is the best newbie engineer because she costs less. Also, the Hochfir is probably the best gun in the game to improve your aim with.

(Dysfnal) #11

Lower skill level: Proxy
Mid skill level: Bush
High skill level: Fletcher

As a level 52, I would recommend Fletcher. As a matter of fact, he’s my go-to merc for everything. If you hate waiting for people to do the objective, while being able to do a lot of killing, Fletcher is your guy. He’s not the best at defending but if you know what your doing he’s not that bad. Piece of advice, whether you pick proxy or fletcher, remember, keep moving and learn how to wall jump when dodging. b^_^d

(MrLashnibro) #13

It depends on your play style. If you want to be a glass cannon, quick on the battle field then Proxy is the girl for you. If you want a bit more health but easy to learn then it’s Bushwacker. But if you really want a challenge, go with Fletcher. He’s ridiculously strong only if you play him correctly.
Also don’t regret buying Phoenix, he’s one of the best Medics in the game. His Healing Pulse can heal anyone that is in the radius whether they’re in or out of combat and his key skill is Self Revive which can offer you a second chance on the field. He’s an aggressive medic so try to be on the pace. He also has access to most of the good SMGs in game: Hochfir, KEK-10 and Crotzni.

(Nibbles02) #14

Bushwacker is actually easier than Proxy, since Proxy is basically good for covering large zones and rush-planting, but Bushwacker has a turret that, if placed correctly, insures you will get tons of kills for not really doing much but replacing it when it gets shot down.
