My assumption here is that having all the mercs in the game at once was making it difficult for Splash Damage to figure out the balance between mercs. The mercs they’ve left in the game are very similar to the classes in ET, which is a great baseline IMO:
- Fragger = Soldier
- Arty/Skyhammer = Lieutenant
- Sawbones/Aura = Medic
- Proxy = Engineer
- Vasili = Covert Ops
From here as they release mercs one by one, balance issues will be pretty glaring. For example, if they release Nader and suddenly every other merc starts doing poorly, they can clearly see that Nader is OP. Or alternatively, if for example Aura’s healing station is looking OP, but it’s brought down much easier with Nader, then they can see that probably isn’t a balance issue.
Although I really miss Stoker/Phoenix, I’m glad SD is taking the time to get things right.
