When will Splash Damage comment the Linux client?

(LeMisanthrope) #1

There has been a lot of speculations about a Linux client for Brink all over the internet and the forum(be aware of the obvious windowzer trolls/fanboys). Most of us know that the legendary TTimo works at id Software and not Splash Damage but we haven’t given up all hope yet. The main reasons are the facts that Brink uses openGL and that SD is even bigger than S2 Games. So the only logic consequence of this would be a release of a Linux client. However the only comment we got on this was a very immature post from a certain Exedore:rolleyes:. I think we deserve an official statement.

THIS THREAD IS NOT A WINDOWS VS GNU/LINUX THREAD. FANBOYS ARE WELCOMED TO DISCUSS THAT TOPIC ELSEWHERE.

What you refer to as immature, others found amusing. Impossible to please everyone.

In any case, we’re totally and 100% focused on just getting the game done at the moment - it’s still too early to discuss anything beyond that.

(Nail) #3

until Steam makes a Linux client, I’m afraid you’ll be stuck with Wine or POL

(mortis) #4

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t the publisher Bethesda be the one to make the call on supported platforms since they’re footing the bill? I’m thinking that SD (who is awesome by they way) doesn’t get to dictate every detail of the game to the publisher. Like all business, it is a matter of negotiation, marketing and profitability.

And as Nail pointed out, there is no Steam client for Linux…

(Nail) #5

correct, Splash Damage has already stated it’s up to Bethesda/ZeniMax

Thread solved

No one wants to use Steam anyway. I’ll just buy the Linux client from another store. Even windowzers deserves better.

(DarkangelUK) #7

That’s a broad statement, I know of plenty people that are happy to use steam… and some glad that it has steamworks integration.

(SockDog) #8

You’ll be wanting a port and SD creating all the Steamworks/Live/PSN functionality just for the linux version then. Yeah, erm, good luck with that.

IMO you need two things.

Brink to sell well, be popular and hold a respectable online persistent headcount.

Steam support for Linux to be released.

Right now I’d say you’ve got more chance (and a hope for a linux version) if you see Brink released on the Mac.

(Apples) #9

May I point the obvious? :

 • steam sux
 • steam only for brink sux moar
 • You spent more time inter-platform than inter-OS
 • No linux is ghey
 • I’m gonna get banned
 • Why dont you release an actual PC footage?
 • Do you care bout your hardcore fans ?
 • Why is this game so slow?
 • Can I haz a pink hat please? or at least a nice dragon to ride in the preorder?

Meh!

I won’t buy a game anywhere but Steam. Aussie prices are twice the price as the Steam price, and I love the game overlay ui… Web browsing whilst waiting in a lobby etc is the best invention ever!!!

(Joe999) #12

you’re lucky. in austria/germany the steam prices are higher than the prices in the retail store.

(LyndonL) #13

Lucky? Nah I think it’s just we’re really UNlucky for retail games here… Our retail games are about $100AU. That’s about $92US…

Anyway sorry for diverging from the topic.

(Shiv) #15

please link to cheaper.
I only buy from sales to keep my costs down, hard to find some of the older stuff, especially beating the 75% off steam drops them by.

(BioSnark) #16

It was announced in a video interview somewhere. Here’s an alternate primary source. Rather than making new threads and such for this question and linux you can also go digging, yourself

They’re able to have the best sale prices among D2D, GamersGate, Impulse & co.

Didn’t understand that part but no there were no such statement to be found using Google. The one and only SE.

(kamikazee) #18
correct, Splash Damage has already stated it’s up to Bethesda/ZeniMax
Actually, you can update games with a clean-room implementation of the Steam client…
The question is how much the game depends on Steam itself.

(Joe999) #19

why do you think you deserve that and a linux version? did you do anything special to deserve that? i’m just curious because your arguments in your first post lack a lot of reason.

(BioSnark) #20

He’s referring to the discount prices.

I’m saying you can use the search feature for your questions (steam, linux). Fine a thread that looks promising. Click on the Splash Damage icon () if it’s present. It will appear at the top of the thread and to the left of any Splash Damage employee post and will allow you to browse through their responses to the topic. Eventually you should be able to find answers to your questions.
