When Can We Expect RTCW 2 To Be Released ?

(eRRoLfLyNN) #21

ET will still own it though, lol :moo:

i’m guessing we can rule out Greymatter anyway, since they just released a new map pack for CoD:UO.

Hello all, I admin two rtcw servers and can tell you their is a lot of people trying to keep the game alive. We need help from the developers. If there is any doubt, try stopping by the master server list, recently I have noticed more servers starting up. Anyway how about a release of some new offical maps to let the rtcw community know yall have not forgot about us. The game just playes well and people love it, satisfy our habbit, its time to feed again.

I doubt they’ll make new official maps, ive never known a company to support a game this long after release.

(Sauron|EFG) #25

I don’t think a single company will make both SP and MP, and I don’t think we can rule out GMI either.

i think SD have already confirmed that they will not be releasing any more maps for ET unless the owners of ET (activision) want them too; so its no good asking SD. Perhaps if every single ET player sent an email to the top dog at activision then he might employ SD to make three more maps just to make us all shut up and go away. Tbh thats not a bad idea for an online petition

Realistically, I would have to say late summer 2006. 2007 would be very disappointing, but not all too surprising considering all the delay that is going on in the gaming business the few last years.

People saying that their 64 player server is full all the time, Fueldump all the way etc. is hardly the part of the Wolf community I care about the most. I’m not trying to sound all “l33t” here - I accept that people want to focus on different things - it’s just that it’s so damn sad to see all those top clans fold in such a short time. Some will rise from the ashes, but it’s a dark omen written in blood, if you ask me.

As mentioned, it doesn’t make much sense that RTCW 2 would come that much later than the first one did, compared to what’s happening with BF for example. I suppose Enemy Territory is the answer to that riddle. They want to milk their products for profit as long as possible, but we can hardly blame a business company for doing what it’s suppose to do. “But ET was free, dumbass!” Yeah, and that is why they wouldn’t have made enough money on a possible RTCW2 if would have been released in, say, 2004. In a sense, ET was a RTCW2, from an askewed point of view. So the faster ET die, the sooner we will have RTCW2. I’m joking, but I also think there are some truth to that.

I also don’t think RTCW was as popular as a lot of fans would like to think. I mean it had a good community with very devoted fans, but games like CS, the UT series, Q2, Q3, SC and WC3 got much more attention in both the competition scene and on the public Internet servers. So it’s unnecessary to say that ET after all is the best game ever made; in this case it’s what the masses think that matters.

Another thing I’ve been thinking of: I know very little about making games, but wouldn’t it take much shorter time to make RTCW2 than most other games? I mean, you already have the concept; WW2, classes, fast paced gameplay - improving what someone else has already done with a few new touches - and you already have the engine, so it shouldn’t take that long. After all, the community don’t want the game to be that much different from what RTCW was, because if it will, the fans will be disappointed and shun it, unless it brings some groundbreaking new ideas into the light. Just look at how small the differences was between RTCW and ET; they were both immensely popular and shared a lot of players, but there was still a lot of people that wouldn’t convert. Some because they simply didn’t like ET, but I also think that some were “forced” over because it was either that or quit gaming all together. There is a good possibility that the unknown developer will try to please both sides by making it a crossover, taking the best of both worlds. Make whatever you want of that.

But how come they suddenly became so eager to cover up the slip on Tech TV? That kind of free hype would be excellent promotion, so why not? The only answer I can find is that they have discussed it and decided, “Yes, we could make some good money on that, so let’s find a developer”. In other words, everything is (was) so uncertain that it probably wasn’t too smart to say anything, lest it would never happen.

As for the January comment; that was probably just something you picked up on a forum or something, so I wouldn’t even bother to post it if I were you. No offense.

Judging from the spurious discussions on the Internet, because that is all the information we have right now, it seems likely that a new developing company will make it. I think that is a reason to be concerned. Unless of course it’s the same team under a new name. A new developer will probably push forth their own ideas too much to put their own creative identity and trademark on the game. That could be a good thing of course, but chances are it will not.

But I’m pretty sure that before RTCW2 will have an exact release date, ET will look like the RTCW community is right now. Or possibly worse.

Some pointed out that mappers are doing their thing, but to that I say “So?”. From the maps mentioned in this thread, only Supply Depot is good. The rest is either mediocre or straight out shoddy. Who made Supply Depot anyway? How come he or she hasn’t made any other good maps? I’m not gonna hijack this thread into a map discussion, but I think one of the most negative aspects of custom maps are the lack of “intelligence” and creativity. There are too maps with tanks and other “cool” gimmicks, which are exactly the kind of things clan players whine about. I suppose this is an excellent opportunity for someone to say, “Then why don’t you do it better yourself?”. Well, I’m not a mapper, and I don’t think you have to be a musician to be able to criticize good or bad music. Thankfully. The possible changes for Goldrush 2 by the ETPro team (bani?) looks promising, BTW.

Speaking of bani, at the risk of repeating what everyone else has said a thousand times and of stating the obvious, ETPro is what has glued the ET community so strongly together for this long. Thanks, bani boy.

but, there is no spoon

Exactly why are all the clans folding? Am i stupid/missing something? Is it lack of attention/prize?
Seriously, I don’t know why.

… it’s a good guess that they are working on an RTCW/ET followup. AFAIK, 2 games on the doom III engine have been announced or hinted at, Q4 and a Wolfenstein game. Raven is doing Q4, and SD has said publicly they are working on a Doom III engine game.
… based on their own IP. Although they have yet to state publically exactly what that game is in development it was mentioned on their jobs page a while back (the 1st round of LD jobs placed) that the applicants would be working with D3 tech under their own IP… having said that, a comment told to me by a guy in the buz suggested that SD doesn’t have the track record to be developing a SinglePlayer product based on someone elses IP so it’d be highly unlikely to have been given something as ‘big’ as RtCW 2 - it’s all pretty much speculation though untill, as mentioned numerous times above, an official announcment is made.

I’ve kind of been keeping track of this here…

As for ‘when’… late 2005 at the very earliest, mid 2006 guestimated time of arrival.

(DG) #33

Hmm,
SD = something TBA, on DOOM3 engine
Greymatter = recently done United Offensive (and released a major update to it this week)
Nerve = Ressurection of Evil
Raven = Quake 4
Infinity Ward = ?

who else PC-FPS wise are linked with activision?

(kat) #34

not necessarily linked to Activision, but another couple of ‘known devs’ working with (or rumored to be - Ritual) the D3 engine…
HeadGames (makers of Rune?)
Ritual we’re rumored to be looking at D3 but nothing more than even the faintest of rumors there

(Sick Boy) #35

Ritual was rumoured to maybe start working on Sin 2 on the Doom 3 engine (screenshots : http://www.ritualistic.com/screens.php/sin2/Sin+II/ )
Interplay’s financial report leaked the development of Kingpin 2, possibly on the D3 engine.(xatrix? gray matter?)
Raven will probably make SOF 3 after they finished Quake4
