What's needed to play a roq video in ET?

(Shaderman) #1

Hi.

I made a roq video which works when playing with /cinematic example.roq from the console, but won’t work in my box map with a shader like this:

textures/blah/movie
{
videomap video/example.roq (tested videomap example.roq, too)
      blendfunc add
      rgbGen identity
}

To narrow it down, I used the existing etintro.roq in a shader, with the same result  I think it’s not a problem with the roq videos or the shader I use and assume it must be a wrong cvar setting, brush size (I tried to keep the aspect ratio of the video for the brush), compiler option or something else. Unfortunately the topic “roq” isn’t covered very well imo (especially for ET), but I hope for your help now  Any ideas or hints?

Btw does someone know of a ET map with a roq video?

Slightly related question (sorry not an answer). How did you make the roq?

(Shaderman) #3

I tried several ways to create roq files but the best one imo is to use the Quake Video Maker.

Bad news: It’s ETPro related  I use ETPro even for testing my maps but tried my roq map without the mod now and it works. I hope it’s a bug in ETPro and not a feature :eek2:

its not a bug in etpro. roq is builtin to the ET renderer, mods cant break that even if they wanted to.

I know a mapper that has done this, Look for RED UK, If I run into him on MSN Ill surely tell him to come here and help you out!!!..
He made the map CTF_Halo which has a roq movie in it…

(Schaffer) #7

Did he add a roq file to it? I did the CM and the load screen but never saw a release. i guess I hang out in the wrong parts of the world

Hey
Yeh my map had a roq in a model (televised from polycount) it was just a blinking eye, the shader u posted looks right the roq has to be in it own folder called video (u prob know this)
I think the resolution may had a part to play like texture’s it has to be the power of 2 i think??
Hope this helps.

@Schaffer yeh i released my maps think i posted about it some time back but prob got ignored  also posted them over at marko’s place.

(Schaffer) #9

Hi Red, I’ve been hell busy so probably missed, not ignored. better check it out. Are the other maps there as well? QVM roqs (had to get that pun in there)

and what’s up with those command map shaders? those need special treatment too, in order to work
with etpro. the way i’ve understood shaderman he took a stock-roq file that comes shipped with ET
and tested the playback once by console, once ingame with etmain and once again with etpro. now
if that same, untouched file plays within console and ingame etmain… but NOT with etpro… well to
me that looks as if it’s etpro related

as etintro.roq comes shipped with ET i don’t think we need to worry about the technical specs of the
file… it can be found in the /video folder as well, so there shouldn’t be anything wrong with the file.

The problem seems to be the way I tested my map. I have a separate ET installation for mapping which I start with +set fs_game etpro to use ETPro 3.1.0 (testing movers with b_moverscale is great! ;)). Short summary using a single installation of ET:

  • The roq video doesn’t work when I start ET with ETPro (+set fs_game etpro)
  • The roq video works when running the same ET installation without ETPro

Update:

  • The roq video works when I host the map (pk3) with my mapping installation (using ETPro) and connect with my other “gaming installation”.

What does this mean now? If it’s not a ETPro bug like Bani said, there must be a difference in hosting the game (maybe local hosting with dedicated 0 is broken?). I’m happy now because I know how to help me, but is there maybe a workaround for easier testing?

@Bani (offtopic): Would it be possible to show *.map files with “tab completion” (sorry, don’t know the right word for it) in the console? It would be very helpful for testing maps with /devmap …
