Whats coming in the next patch?

(HandOfGod) #41

So we will basically get 2 patches when the DLC releases? Also, since you are “working on a patch” now, Im guessing we will have to wait about as long as what we have already waited to get this material, as the title patch will have to go through MS approval process as well? Sounds like an excuse for making us wait even longer.

With as much bull**** as people are putting up with for this game, the tiny DLC will not compensate for our trouble. Way too little, wayyy too late.

Why dont you just say “our **** didnt pass the MS process so its going to be longer”?

(AmishWarMachine) #42
exactly! and also explains why sometimes when you play you see the opposing teams character models in your cut scenes (e.g. i was playing resistance on sec tower, and saw AmishWarMachine’s hulk hogan helping escort Necheyev out, even though he was playing as security)
No, that’s because I’m omnipresent~

(HandOfGod) #43

When I installed it to my HDD, it didn’t make ANY difference with the texture popping. It was just as bad.

(thesuzukimethod) #44

lol.

must mean i have split personalities then, b/c i often see the char model of another one of my chars in the cutscenes - especially the “shooting the dragonov at the retreating team” clips in resort (refuel?) and ccity.

(Shinigami) #45

BTW, does anyone know if the DLC will come out on a Tuesday specifically? i hear thats the day psn updates the psn store and all the dlc becomes available. dont know much about xbox 360 though.
We actually considered the option to allow Brink to be installed to a PS3 HDD and even tried it here locally in our development environment, but we didn’t see any significant gain from it.

The reason for this is that on the PS3 Brink will use the hard disk cache, which is a part of the hard disk that’s reserved for games to freely write to and read from. As the game progresses all the important files are copied here and from then on read from the hard disk instead of the Blu-ray. This works out to be the same as installing the game, but rather than having you wait until it’s done installing you can jump straight into the game. After playing the game for a little bit there is no noticeable difference between installing and caching because they both run from the hard disk effectively.

The Xbox 360 has support for a similar form of caching, but bear in mind that you will need a hard disk for this. We also recommend to install on the Xbox 360 because the cache is essentially cleared every time Brink starts, so it will need to do the copying every time.

As for the cut-scenes in particular, we can’t prerender those because your character is in them.
Thanks for that. So my next question therefore is, are you guys working on a solution to fix the graphical issues? The texture popping is really quite bad.
They would have to replay the cutscene with different body types to make sure there are no clipping errors with the larger bodies / more outlandish gear, but if they keep “your” character in the right positions (away from walls and doorways that he may clip into) and in the right poses (not trying to lick his elbow or anything) then it should be relatively simple to do skeletal animations that any model can carry out and still look good.

It takes a little more work than a single, known model but not much more and certainly not as much as was suggested in the post I orignally responded to.
they manage it fine in killzone3

it has the best end scenes ive seen. it features the best players so you always know if you are the best player, you will be the main part in the cutscenes. you hold the right weapons too.

Yeah. I’m not saying it’s difficult. I’m saying it’s pretty straighforward as long as the animators remember that sometimes there’s going to be a skinny guy walking driving the boat and sometimes there’s going to be Hulk Hogan. I joined the conversation to point out to someone that it’s not a lot of work / disk space to have multiple cutscenes for all the different customizations (because it’s really only 1 cutscene).

There need to be more models and code that handle the customization, but once that’s in place most of the work is done by the animators / 3d artists. I wouldn’t say any gameplay / maps got sacrificed to make way for the customization. As for space: DVDs hold loads of data nowadays. Some extra models and textures don’t make much of a difference. Of course this is all my opinion and to get the real story you’d actually need to work in SD’s offices.

(Hortey) #49

that’s nice, it always irked me when my heavy would have a sweet game using the gatling… then during the end cutscene in brink my guy would be some 300lb bomb defusal tech wearing mammoth holding a kross.

It looks pathetic, but I get why they did it. They had to give everyone snipers or smg’s because it would look off if a light was holding a gatlung at the end.

(Terminator514) #50

I have it installed and texture pop is definitely still present, but I’m not sure how prevalent it is when the game is not installed.

(Terminator514) #51

The Xbox Live marketplace also updates on Tuesday I believe, we also get arcade games on Wedsday now, so I’m not sure if new content can come out on either day. If the only day the PSN updates is Tuesday, I suppose that’s when we’ll get the DLC.

(BiigDaddyDellta) #52

how does fallout get another DLC before BRINK gets it’s first one? that’s effed up.

(zenstar) #53

Because Fallout is a cash cow that is already established and not a new IP?
The business bet is that Fallout is a safer place to invest money.

(BiigDaddyDellta) #54

I didn’t mean litterally how, more like how is that fair.

(zenstar) #55

I know  I just don’t like Bethesda and like to point out their money-grubbing when I can.

It’s not fair but it’s really in MS / Sony’s hands at the moment. My money is on MS having lost the application forms or something.

LOL. what publisher isnt money-grubbing?

(zenstar) #57

Self publishers… sometimes. Unfortunately you have to start off rich and if you’re unlucky you’ll end up poor if you’re a self publisher.

Look at someone like Trent Reznor who self publishes his music now. He’s a great example of someone who does things for his fans / the community. He’s given away an album as a thank you. He’s paid out of his own pocket for heat sensitive ink on his CDs (and got really PO’ed with certain distributors who charged extra for the disk because of the ink that didn’t cost them a cent extra) just to make a cool cd.

Then you look at his old publishers who keep pushing reprints of his albums with new packaging to make it look like he’s released a new CD and squeeze people into buying a 22 year old record (god i feel old). sigh
