What the hell is wrong with GtkRadiant?

(void_slayer) #1

The edge tool is biased toward a certain 2d view (different every time), there’s no way to simply add an edge to a brush (instead you have to turn it into a perfect polygon with the # of sides you want and reshape it), and there are tons of stupid glitches in the 2d views like not drawning an edge that exists and drawing a straight edge slightly diagonal.

What I mean by the edge tool being biased is that sometimes when I try to use it in a 2d view, it doesn’t move the edge I am pointing to, but instead moves an edge that isn’t even on the axis of the 2d view I’m working on. for instance:

I’m trying to make this: (black dashes are empty space)

O-------------O
|--------------|
O-------------O

into this:

O---------O
|------------
O-------------O

by dragging the upper right edge to the left. But instead, it moves an edge on a different axis, giving me this:

O---------O—O
|----------|----|
O---------O—O

I can’t work with GtkRadiant to make ET maps, it has too many problems. Is SDRadiant any better? Or better yet, are there ANY non-radiant editors for ET out there I could try?

hrmm… seems like this is something ive never seen. Im not understanding exactly what you are trying to do… is this one brush or 4 brushes makinf a square box with no top or bottom?

Maybe you can screencap some shots of what you are doing or show a 3d view of it here…

(void_slayer) #3

I’ll need some webspace before I can post an image…I think.

It is one brush. The O’s represent edges of the brush on a parallel axis to your sight. The (-)'s and (|)'s are edges on axes perpendicular to your sight. I don’t know how better to explain it.

(d3coy) #4

ok well if it is one brush then you could try highlighting the brush and hitting V on the keyboard… a green dot will show up at each vertice of the brush… you can drag that to modify the shape of the one brush. However I would make sure you have snap to grid checked or you could run into probs later.

EDIT… also you can lock the x,y, or z position to make it easier to modify… do this with the buttons on the tool bar lable x,y,z… if its pressed it wont allow the vertice to be modified on that axis… this is helpful to keep some vertices at the same height or length…

also using the way to modify you can click and drag the green dots inside the 3d view.

Yeah, I’m aware that I could use the vertex manipulation tool to move both vertices accordingly (i will have to move 2, because I’m trying to move an edge). But if the edge tool actually worked right, then it could cut the time of doing this in half, as it was meant to do. I’m also aware that I could use the clip tool to do this, but I think the edge tool should work regardless.

Edit: Thanks for the advice, d3coy.

(d3coy) #6

np… ive never used the edge tool myself… cliping seems to be the easiest way for me

(DWM|Commando) #7

just manipulate the brushes in teh 3d view, don’t cry about it, we all have to deal with it  its cause there are so many points that you could be clicking on in the 2d views so it dosnt know which one and it takes the top.

(void_slayer) #8

Commando: I’m trying to manipulate an edge. An edge consists of 2 points, and a convex 3d shape can only have a maximum of 2 points at the same position on a particular axis. The editor should be moving both points accordingly, there is no doubt to which 2 it should be moving. It is a problem with the editor, not me. Trust me, I’ve been a happy Worldcraft user for years, using the edge tool for far more complex things without a single problem.

I’m sorry for being all crabby, but after using an editor like Worldcraft for so long, it’s hard to start using another editor and find out you can’t do have the stuff on it. Plus it’s glitchy.

What’s wrong with the clipper? You’ll get the same exact result. I myself never use the edge manipulation tool.

(carnage) #10

I myself never use the edge manipulation tool

what to u edit the verts of a terain grid with?

If you don’t like the way edge edit works, feel free to fix it. :moo:

However, unless I’m misunderstanding your ASCII art, the situation you describe generally works for me in 1.4. The only situation it doesn’t is where the middle handle is too close to the corners. Even then, you get can get it if you drag the correct handle.

You can also use control+sidestretch (left mouse outside of the brush), which should also get you the result you want.

Or the clipper tool.

SDradiant is just an older version of gtkradiant. Quark may or may not work for ET.

(FireFly) #12

Never Ever use vertex editing on a square brush (4 point) unless you know what you are doing. Else You will most probably mess up the normals resulting in some dissappearing brushed next time you load up your map. Use the clipper tool instead…
To understand your problem better: find a (free) website where you can host your images instead of the ASCII art you posted

(void_slayer) #13

Don’t worry about it. I’m not going to be using Gtk anyway.

(TFate) #14

I use the vertex editing tool, silly!
