What the hell happened to Brink?

(Codine) #1

Okay first let me start this out saying that this is not a hate thread. I enjoy the game very much even though its the bastard child of the Enemy Territory series.

There are several serious flaws in my opinion that flaw this game greatly. Leave technical problems outside of this discussion. I am making this strictly about gameplay mechanics from an ET veterans point of view.

Firstly is the use of the new class item system.
As many of you know in the old ET players would equip a medpack or syringe separately and then proceed to use them as if they were an individual weapon. In Brink they took that out completely which left me pretty disappointed at the start. Instead everything is basically used with 1 button. The game has no more item tossing which was another blow to me. The new resurrection system was a pretty fresh idea but I wish they would have kept the original method in as the normal way.

Every class suffers from this new 1 button action function. When you build or repair something as an engineer you get “locked on” to it and can only move left and right. It’s very inconvenient if you need to make a quick break for it since moving forward or back is impossible. Also you can’t equip the blowtorch before hand so it’s very annoying and frustrating for me when I’m trying to do an objective. I just feel so sluggish and bogged down to this all.

I don’t really have a problem with the new hacking mechanics since it was basically the same as engineering missions in quake wars. I just wish you could pull the items out beforehand and not be stuck to 1 button for everything.

On a positive note, the class buffs are a very nice feature to the game, but still I feel myself very handicapped and somewhat naked without being able to equip the items beforehand.

The online of Wolf09 had the same problem and some people even tried to mod it back in with a wolfpro mod. We can all see how that game ended up, Atleast you could toss items on the ground, even if it was the same 1 button function mechanic.

Communication
Now I’m not sure if the game has working voice chat or not since I’ve only heard one person talking before and there was no indication on who it was. Quake Wars showed who was talking and had fireteam, team, and global chat options.

This next one is a HUGE problem in the game!
The game has no Quick voice commands which is a very MAJOR flaw in this game. If anybody played the old ET’s you would remember how important they are to keep in communication and throw up markers on the map/screen. Brink has no such feature and is impossible to know if somebody needs ammo or health unless you are right next to them.

Also not being able to do all the fun various voice commands certainly does kill a lot of the fun and nostalgia for me.

It’s pretty obvious that consoles took priority sometime during development and is the only reason why I can think of the voice commands being removed completely.

No prone. Some people may call this nitpicking at this point but prone was very useful in the ETs.

So in closing, I feel that Brink was a very a ambitious game but lost its roots and ET charm along the way. Are consoles to blame for this? Who knows, but that’s what I’ll say that what happened to it.

i know it really isn’t very important but it would be cool if SD added some voice commands.

Do you really think that prone would suit brink?

Voice commands have always been a big thing with ET. Calling for a medic or ammo would put an icon on you and on the radar. Also a lot of the commands were pretty funny and offered a good laugh.

It would certainly suit Brink more than the other ET’s. Brink is a much slower pace, but that aside prone can be a lifesaver if you can’t crouch low enough.

(Spaiker) #4

Fast paced? Prone is more for snipers and stuff, I don’t see me using it IF they would inplement it. Wouldn’t that interfere with SMART?

(Codine) #5

Prone is useful for anybody. I use it more for keeping myself alive than anything else. Like I said, prone can save your life if you cant crouch low enough behind cover.

Also I don’t see it having any real problems with SMART because you’re just dropping to the ground.

You automatically call for Medic / Ammo when wounded or low. You get an icon over your head for both as well.

Surely there’s no need for voice commands and requests because the idea of the game is to support your team-mates anyway? You shouldn’t need to ask for a buff from a team-mate as your team-mate should be prioritising it first-off as it gives them more XP and whatnot.

Besides, I hear all the little criticisms and how they relate to other games. Surely Brink is supposed to be fresh and original, purposely leaving behind a lot of elements that would compare it to other games?

I just got my copy and wanted to read a few more reviews/updates on the game before getting involved in it. I’m in the EU and I received the game by post today from Amazon UK which was pretty impressive considering it’s not out until Friday!

(trollface) #8

The only thing i agree with you on is the voicechat indication issue. If that is indeed the case.

The rest are kind of silly complaints and it seems to me like you want to play ETQW rather than this game.

(ThePilgrim101) #9

Crazy,

Prone would suit Brink just about as much as prone would suit Bad Company 1, i.e.:

Not. At. All.

Neither of what he said are actual “flaws” in the game. It plays well without either, and I imagine it’s just a personal preference. Though, Voice Indication could be a bit clearer; you have to check the scoreboard to see which character “is taking the supply command post!”

However, prone? No, it wouldn’t be that useful.

Blame consoles, everything has to be dumbed down for controllers.

Well why should you need to pull out something before using it? It seems like that would just slow the game down to me. I’ve played plenty of W:ET, and I understand missing the dropping of ammo packs/health packs, but why care about equipping needle/torch? That seems like a step backwards in UI. What’s the major difference? The only difference I can think of is that it forces the player to have yet another item bound to a key they have to remember, and it increases the time to perform an action. Well the first doesn’t have any positive effects and the latter can be executed by increasing the time it takes to repair/heal/whatever. I like the action button system for the fluidity it adds to the game. Want to buff a teamate? You don’t have to worry about them running away while you pull out the appropriate item, just hit a single button.

Agreed. What the hell is the point of a fireteam voip if you can’t make fireteams? I have not gotten voip working and I can’t even test it in the options to find out if there’s something wrong on my end :\

Agree with communication voices.

The rest? Brink its not ET…i dont think parkour guys like to prone :D.

I really would love to see ET 2. but brink its not ET

Oh I forgot to add this to the list but is anybody else annoyed by the regenerating health? I know the game is supposed to be more fluid but regenerating health is just plain dumb. Either make it slower or just do what BC2 did with it. The game has a medic, regenerating health just seems pointless in a squad game.
