What makes you hate rhino so much

(Killerbannapple) #1

I love playing rhino for several reasons that are not really important right now. what is important is the question above. more often than not if i choose to play rhino at least one person on the other team will get very upset about it. what makes dying to rhino and worse than one of fraggers mini nukes? the options below are based off of the things people say about rhino(translations are also included*).

He’s designed to be an easy merc to play, high health, high damage, slow as balls but it doesn’t matter when you’re so tanky.

And not only that, because of that design he also has little depth, so he’s really kinda pointless in a more competitive environment. Hes just boring to use and frustrating to deal with.

i have recently been playing Sparks a lot so when i meet a Rhino i’m really happy, it’s impossible to miss him with your revive gun, always an easy kill. i don’t hate him.

What’s frustrating about Rhino is that you are required to have Nader or Fragger or Stoaker on your team, otherwise you automatically lose in a pub enviroment.
Because Rhino will just camp in a corner on an Aura station and because you can’t outrange him because of the corner camp, he will instantly kill everyone forever.

I’ve not seen him played since Stoaker was given away for free and so many people have the counter in their squad as a result, and honestly the game is better off for it.

I also think I’ve never seen Rhino being played on Attack and doing anything useful.

I have an entirely different reason.

Almost all my special loadouts are of Rhino and he’s my least played merc.

Rhino doesn’t fit on Dirty Bomb since he’s too slow when he’s using he’s minigun.
I think that they should incentive Rhino to use more his primaries and secondaries, they’re great!
Maybe add a cooldown to the Minigun, like it is with Nader Grenade Launcher.
Idea:
The Minigun have a limited amount of ammo (250 rounds)
Each 15 seconds you get another 50 rounds.
(The stats are just examples)
To compensate the nerf, they could increase his movement speed with the Minigun a Little bit.

This way Rhino will not have unlimited ammo EVERY SECOND, and also would make his primaries more useful.

Another interesting Nerf would be on Aura Health Station.
My idea is to take a time till regeneration starts, depending of how much damage you take.
You take an SMG shot, the Regen Starts almost instantly.
You take an Sniper shot, the Regen takes a few milliseconds to start.
Also to compensate the Nerf, increase the amount of HP given by the Health Station.
This could make pushes more easy, but also would incentive players on Defense to prevent enemies to get to the Health Station.

Just nerf his health, buff his speed (120 HP, 410 SP is where I’d start), and make him take reduced damage from the front while his Minigun is out. In return, he can’t sprint with his Minigun out. He’ll be a Fragger/Hammer with a shotty and no nades, but once he’s in position, and the moment is right, he can plant himself down and hold an area, or push into the enemy utilizing the Minigun.

It would make Rhino the ultimate point man, capable of assaulting and stopping assaults with ease. Might also make his other weapons useful and allow him to position himself correctly for the Minigun strike. We’d also have to drastically increase the cooldown time of the Minigun, making timing and position absolutely crucial to success.

Boils down to this really.

He’s not hard to fight, he’s not hard to play, he’s a roadblock you have to deal with to get to the fun. Nothing about him screams “skilled gamer”, and the only thing going for him is his tankiness and voice lines.

On top of this, any other merc can do what he does with far more flexibility to other scenarios that may happen, while Rhino is stuck on an Aura station in a hallway.

(Captain_Forward) #11

You can hit V21 and find Aura’s station?
You can jump and hit RMB at the same time?
Congratulations, you just mastered your Rhino’s performance!

(blisteringOwlNest) #12

I don’t like losing one on ones specifically, and without a team or a surprise flank on an idiot, you always do.

Actually never mind I lose every 1 v 1 due to my shoddy frame rate XD

(tominatorx) #13

Especially when you’re playing as a medic with a SMG… which is what I play most of the time…

(UnicLunatic) #14

Rhino is just a big bag of meat, slow, very situational. He is usually an easy kill. I don’t mind him except when stuck with an Aura healing station, then switch to Stoker/Fragger/Nader, problem solved.

(Dieu-Sama) #15

So much rage on the most awesome of all mercs

Rhino :3

Meh, after hundreds of hours playing Heavy on TF2, i’m immune to the duh, pleiying rhino/heavy iz no skil ! anyway

(LifeupOmega) #16

Well if you enjoy slow, and frankly mind numbingly easy, mercs you’re free to, but don’t expect to ever compare to the players who play mercs who can adapt to any situation with far more versatility.

And honestly. Heavy was and still is no skill. I had 20 hours as Heavy when I stepped into Highlander and still top scored every game without a single loss during the season.

(Dieu-Sama) #17

I’m no comp. player but I play exclusively on lvl 10+ stopwatch, and I disagree with all your statements about Rhino’s lack of versatility.

I can play Rhino on both offense and defense, on all 6 maps while I almost never stick to an healing station, on the contrary I stay as mobile as possible, and with proper support (nothing exceptional, just what a regular assault need), I can carry the team, so yes, I dare to compare to the players who play mercs who can adapt to any situation with far more versatility (lol, arrogance coupled with ignorance at it’s best)

(Amerika) #18

I find it hilarious to flank with Rhino and it’s actually quite fun. There is nothing quite like coming up on a room of 3-4 people all in a tight space with their backs turned as you start up the mini-gun. It’s rather satisfying. He’s definitely not the deepest merc to use mechanically speaking but a lot of fun can be had with him on pubs if you aren’t just sitting in the corner on a healing station with your gun spun up 24/7.

(Dieu-Sama) #19

Incline over 9000

(Ballto) #20

you need exactly one person with splash damage to denest a rhino and he needs more ability to play than fragger nader and fletcher because he has to be in LOS to get kills with his ability and clear points.

Also, while his minigun is not as balls bad at range as people say it is (dont get me wrong its still bad at range but you dont have to be right up the enemies ass) its still not as effective as really any other gun

his speed is easy enough to compensate for if you can use cover and stick with the team, especially a decent medic, but he needs a team to support him or he goes down fast against one or two people.

he also cannot do objectives really at all unless its defending them, but then you have fletcher who can use just two bombs to completely clear all classes off a c4 with a reasonably fast cooldown and is an objectives specialist, a nader with high damage fast CD nades and a isis death ability, and a fragger who can pretty much toss a nade that OHKOs most classrs (it does 170 damage yes?) that can instant detonate when youcook it, and all of these classs can do it out of LOS, or just by peaking for a moment
