It sounds like you have bad brushes and/or you need to turn some into detail.
Hopefully you’ll know which bit of the map you just edited to cause this problem, and you can fix it. It could end up being easiest to use a select inside, then deleting everything near it - so your sure you got it - and starting that part again.
