What does the "skip" common texture do?

(2Bit) #1

I’ve tried to find a description of the usage of the “skip” texture all over the place without success.

Can someone tell me what it does? I’m ok with the “hint” texture but feel I could be putting “skip” to good use… somehow…

Thanks

skip post,

ps
alot of touchy people here

Hey,
I don’t really understand what you just wrote.
Oasis is full of skip-faces and my bullets have never been clipped by them.
Oasis uses a combination of hint and skip brushes. Does that make any difference?

skip

I don’t really understand what you just wrote.

Dont let it worry you, neither does he.

When using “hint” brush in a map, portals will be made allong each surface. “Skip” is used on faces of a “hint” brush when you want no portal made on that plain.

tsakali that s really wrong.

Weapons get blocked by clipweapon textures. Not every clip texture blocks weapons too.

Skip gets only used when you work with hint brushes. Hint brushes are needed when you want to improve your VIS efficiency in a map to get better FPS. You can cut up the leafs with hints, but when you do that, you make a brush, give it teh skip texture, and only 1 side of the brush gets the hint texture. That side will split the leaf.

And using hint brushes is only good if you really know what you are doing, else it just screws up your map VIS-wise.

FWIW, If you want to be able to correctly filter brushes that have ‘hint’ on some faces and skip and on others, you should use the one named ‘hintskip’ instead of ‘skip’. The contents of the shader is exactly the same, but it will filter with hints in radiant. If you have ‘skip’ and ‘hint’ on the same brush, control+h doesn’t do exactly what you’d want.

You might also want to look at the difference between hint and subtlehint.

Hm iirc all skips and hints get filtered anyways when you filter translucent? That did the trick for me. I don’t think you have much translucent in a map besides clips and skips/hints anyways. (Hope i don’t talk rubbish cuz i set up a new HDD and havent installed radiant yet.)

They probably do, but since you have a key to filter hints, it may as well work :moo:

Thanks to everyone for your help, especially Detoeni for the clear and short explanation that I can understand.
