What are after game penalties for?

(GildedDark) #1

After every match ill have a penalty taken out of my total coin output. What is it for?

(Humbug) #2

It’s for playing with unbalanced teams

(GildedDark) #3

o really? That’s kinda dumb

(immenseWalnut) #4

Not if you want everyone to accrue coins at more or less the same rate (to limit their gain and slow down their merc/loadout progression).

Remember, monetisation = what is best for the publisher, not the player. By limiting your gain, even when you do well, you are being rail-roaded into spending real money.

If I remember right, Nexon controls the major stake in NC Soft, the company that operates Guild Wars 2. At any point in time if some players find a way to earn gold at an accelerated rate (which is undesirable for the money men) the devs at ArenaNet have it patched within hours, even if that means they ignore game breaking bugs for days on end. You are only allowed lots of gold if you are willing to purchase it for real money, anything else is unacceptable to them, and players have even been banned for using exploits.

thats not dumb or monetisation … its just a try to make games more interesting, challenging and fun, who has fun with an completely unbalanced game or even calls it gg or “well done” ?

problem is: nobody notices when a team looses 2 players, cause they quit or somethin.
there should be a notice like : “teams unbalanced, plz change team” ( … or even get some reward for that )

I see your point, plus its not a big deal usually I have penalties of 1 or 5 points

There are also fairly large penalties for playing games with few players. I’ve been docked 60+ credits for games that started as 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3. I guess the point is to discourage small groups of friends to join an empty server for stat-boosting, but it’s a bit frustrating when you just decide to stay with a nearly empty lobby and hope others will join in.

So the players that do well deserve to be penalised for rubbish matchmaking? For poor team balancing? Are your standards really so low, that you consider this acceptable?

This has nothing to do with evening the teams, or finding a rough balance, it is their way of preventing you from profiting from THEIR poor game design that forces us all to suffer rubbish matchmaking again and again. As if WE were the ones responsible for every game being a stomp.

When a match starts 5v7, that is THEIR fault, but you get penalised for it, and you think that is fine? You actually think it makes things ‘more interesting, challenging and fun’? Are you serious? Please tell me are you are either a kid, or a drug-addled adult that doesn’t have a clue. I would hate to think you were actually serious in your beliefs.

How did you manage to read this in negOne’s post?!?! No one says getting penalized for unbalanced games is fun. But clearly penalties are there to encourage you as a player to step up and fix the balance when it’s off, thus making the game more fun for everyone.

As he pointed out the big problem right now is that it’s not always obvious enough when people drop and the balance goes out the window. But assuming this can be improved, you would have no one to blame but yourself when hit with unbalance penalties.

thx, Djiesse, thats what i meant. Walnut argues like one of those guys that cheer themseves winning an unbalanced game against an completely inferior team and call it skill.

@ walnut: 1. my standarts are pretty high, cos im looking for balnced fair and challenging matches. 2. we are talking about PUBs - in a clanfight your points might be right, but on PUBs its just pathetic.

I think a better approach would be to give a reasonable bonus/reward to the player who actually steps up and balances the teams. People might not change teams because they will lose 6 credits. They probably will change teams if they get a 50 or 100 credit bonus (perhaps somehow calculated as a multiplier of time left in the game, so that you can’t just switch right at the end of an unbalanced match and get the full reward). This works better psychologically as well in the mind of the player, imo.

Being an objective based game, it is more than inconvenient to change teams because often you work so hard to do well for your team and now the system expects you to change teams to avoid a penalty. You then have to play for the other team making your own hard work detrimental to your progress in the big scheme of things. This can be exceptionally demotivating. A credit reward/compensation system would mitigate this however, and it would properly recognise players for taking it upon themselves to balance the teams instead of penalising those who don’t. Perhaps a team balancing team change could even be a badge that grants xp? I have not noticed a very good ethic amongst players with regard to wanting and promoting fair teams, but perhaps this could help encourage and change this.

While the system that the developers choose to go with can only do so much, the more experienced players can have a huge impact in the culture of the game and its community. What I mean by this is that more experienced/respected players should be saying (through their actions as well as words) “balanced teams are better than pub stomps”. It should be cool to be the guy who changes teams to balance the game. It should not be cool to be the guy who goes 100/0 with fragger in an obviously unbalanced game, but it is up to the communities natural leaders and players to create this culture.

I suggest they implement something simlar to what Quake Wars did:
If the teams were uneven, you would be asekd if you want to switch team for a X amount of XP. win/win imo

The problem is punishing everyone for the game going sour. You only make people mad. I lost about 40 - 60 in credits just today between a few games because the matches were small, and sometimes lopsided. What’s happening is everyone is getting penalized for leavers and imbalance, and for one team doing better than another team by leaps and bounds.

There’s a better way to all of this: Give more money to the team that stuck with it. Even if change teams and the team you’re on loses, you get the win credit and bonus that your old team got. Penalties is not the way to do it, when I was playing another game, I actually used to swap teams regularly even if they were losing because no matter which team won… I’d still win. Why not just use that system, and give BONUSES to good players?

This would be optimal and fix the issue. Currently the game penalizes you for switching teams on the scoreboard which I found pretty odd.
