Welcome New Players!

(Backuplight) #1

With the launch of open beta, we’re bound to get some fresh meat new players visiting the forums. I thought it’d be a nice idea to drop some info all in one post for them, since there’s bound be a flurry of questions - most of which will no doubt have been asked before!

The Dirty Bomb Team already posted the following page which covers a lot of the basics, explaining how this game can differ from others of the genre. It’s worth a read.

The above link also forwards you to a helpful video, with some tips and tricks for players. Another thing worth a quick watch to get yourself familiar with some aspects of the game.

Beyond all of that, for more detailed information - remember we have a Wiki! This has plenty of information there, and I’m sure more will be added as time goes by. One particular part I liked was the [url=“http://dirtybomb.gamepedia.com/New_Player%27s_Guide”]guide by @PogS - some more useful info there, which hopefully will be added to. If nothing else, a good place to start with the wiki.

Welcome to the game and remember to #PlayDirty >:)

Nice thread  I added most of the DB team’s page content in the wiki New players’s guide. This way all info can be found in a unique place.

This thread has some very useful tips as well. I don’t know if they’re included in the guide, but it’s definitely worth a read.

I like the idea of providing that kind of support for them, but as far as I’ve seen in-game, problem with the new players is usually not their lack of experience or skill in game, it’s them being completly unresponsive, ignoring any kinds of advices or strategies from other players.

While threads like these might help some players who are willing to actually learn something about the game and I do support this idea in 100%, it’s kinda sad that, let’s be honest here, this game will have so many new people ignoring any kind of help of information provided by others that it might turn to another Team Fortress 2 like chaos with VERY low pub game level.

Cheers.

That’s not sad, it makes me really happy actually because it’s a sign of a healthy growing community. I’d much rather have a popular game with a thriving community than one where pub games are challenging but the community is stagnating.

Of course this means that serious players will eventually outgrow the pubs and mainly stick to ranked matchmaking or PUGs/scrims, but that’s not a bad thing.

I mean, you’re not wrong - the actual number of players that visit the forums of a game is always pretty small in comparison to the number of people playing. It can get frustrating trying to let people know what the objective is and still have them off fighting over some random insignificant alley, but I guess for some people that just won’t ever change. For those who want the help though, it’s good to try!

be happy most of the toxicity has stayed on the Steam forum, people who want to invest some time in DB will eventually find their way here, having welcoming attitudes and in depth guides can do nothing but enhance their experience. The W:ET community was made entirely of fan sites, there were no official sites of any kind. People helped people, configs were explained, tactics were explained, and OpenGL problems were dealt with couple million times. It wasn’t until the XP save mods came out that the toxic servers and XPloiters showed up. Help little PogS with the wiki, make it worthy of it’s title and steer people to it

Really loving the community in this game…seems much better than most. Many are willing to help out, and put up with me for my first few games as a complete idiot. Still a couple nobheads out there, but you’ll get that in every game.

This game went way beyond my expectations and I’m so glad I opted to give it a try.

Well, in fact I do really like Dirty Bomb’s community, especially that forum part, but since the game got into open beta now and got hit by waves of new players who probably wouldn’t even look at it if it was still in closed beta or pay to play, the community level kinda dropped down.

Right now it kinda feels like competitive is only good way to play this game and it is as long as you’ve got your own team or have that luck to meet nice people (usually high level, experienced ones) in random matchmaking. Problem with the community right now is not only the fact that many people are rude towards other players, it is also because of, as I’ve mentioned before, how many new players tend to completly ignore objectives, team play, other player’s advices, pretty much everything that makes this game good.

Sorry, but I’m not playing this game for another gun-fest, chaotic FFA gameplay with people bragging about their K/D despite losing the match for obvious reasons like ignoring objectives or 10 years old kids crying on voice chat and telling me what they did with my mother last night.
When I’ve started playing Dirty Bomb I’ve expected a good, tactical, team based game with cool community and nice atmosphere. Game which is good both for relaxing, fun matches and competitive playing. And in fact, I got what I expected, at least until now.

Yes, I know, the community just started growing, people will get into the game, they will learn everything at some point and maybe some people will calm down and mature a bit. But it kinda makes me feel bad because I’ve seen same thing happen to Team Fortress 2 when it went F2P. And the worst thing is, it didn’t change for good, since then TF2 always have been full of completly ignorant, unresponsive newbies and a bit more clever, but really not that much better and more mature players.

I just hope that it won’t happen to Dirty Bomb and, again, I completly support the idea of helping those who actually want to get some help and advices.

Cheers.

the game itself will sift the wheat from the chaff, people willing to invest time will be rewarded, the rest will go back to drooling
