Weapon customization is Brink's best feature.

While the character customization is of dubious value in an FPS game, I have to give kudos to SD for finally making the type of weapons customization I’ve always wanted in a game (or at least in an MP game. Hitman: Blood Money had a pretty dope system as well).

I love custom weapons… it makes me feel more like it’s my gun.

Sure other games have had accessories for weapons, but the issue I’ve always had with them is that it felt less like you were customizing and more like you were upgrading. There’s usually no tradeoff or incentive to not use a particular accessory, so eventually anyone else using that gun will end up with the same gun as yours.

so when SD makes their next game, feel free to include it again.

I’m not saying it’s perfect, so some suggestions:

More incentive to not use a front accessory. No accessory should be a viable option

Stock options (not the kind you get from a company). there should be options to remove the stock for much faster equip time with a big stability penalty. Folding stock for a small increase in equip vs small stability hit, and possibly a custom stock (the kind with adjustable cheek piece) that does the opposite (slower equip, increased stability)

Laser sights. An accuracy boost would be nice, but really I just want laser sights. Because frickin laser beams.

Internal options. this is where rapid fire should go. Actually you could do things like 3-round burst and single shot instead of having multiple weapons to fill those roles.

so… agree/disagree? Support/oppose my suggestions? let’s hear it.

Sounds good to me. I got a kick out of the customization, and overall I’d just have more of it. Maybe include some upgrades that are kind of sci-fi, like some kind of technologies, bio weaponry, or gadgets to add to the feel of uniqueness.

That customization system looks pretty sweet, except a) I’m not big on Sim style shooters and b) screw MS/Xbox. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I buy a console from a company that has pretty much admitted that they charge for online because people are willing to pay for it.

Also, isn’t telling me to die a bit hostile? :stuck_out_tongue:

(iezza) #5

ARENT YOU DEAD YET?

i thought it was PS3 too.

(ArchdemonXIII) #6

I don’t die, I zombify.

It might also be PS3, but in either case, it’s irrelevant: I don’t have one of those either. I mainly play PC games. The only thing that I prefer on a console is fighting games and there hasn’t been any/enough that intrigue to the point of justifying the cost of a new console. I was offered a ps3 as a gft when my old ps2 died and instead had them replace my ps2 where I already have a substantial library of good fighters.

(tangoliber) #7

I never did much customization. I put a front grip on everything and that is usually it. I’ve experimented, but always go back to SMG or AR with front grip and nothing else.

BF3 has pretty customizable weapons as well. I think it’s a cool trend in modern games. That said, I’m more of a fan of BRINK’s character customization than its weapon customization.

(Metal-Geo) #9

Well, nothing beats Crysis’ on-the-fly weapon customization for me.

But I really love how BRINK puts its weapon customization in presentation.

(ArchdemonXIII) #10

I did like the Crysis system to an extent, but it made the guns feel more modular than custom.

Also (and this is totally just me) it irks me that you can change scopes without calibrating them. Then again the quick change worked really well considering how open/adaptive the first half of the game was (before it turned to poo).

I think what I like about custom weapons is that it somewhat forces you to approach a situation in a way that accentuates your gear’s strengths. For example if you have a precision rifle, it’s harder to go full on assault style.

(wolfnemesis75) #11

The Silencer was one part of the weapon customization that I still wish had a bit more added benefit compared to some of the other weapons attaches.

(DarkangelUK) #12

I’m torn with Brink. I’m glad that I could so what I wanted with the guns, but the other half of me felt that my decision had no weight behind it, I could do wtf I wanted with no consequences but that still actually had no weight behind it.

(king_troll) #13

why would you want laser sights, you have a big X in the center of the screen

(ArchdemonXIII) #14

It doesn’t need to actually only fill the role of a laser sight. It could be a bonus to accuracy, or a spread reduction to hipfire. Laser sights are just kind of an iconic accessory. It fees weird not having them, especially since the Seagle clearly has a LAM if you don’t add a sight accessory.

(iezza) #15

Lasers would be nice, so would bipods, but would it take up underbarelled or the sight like crysis 2?

(ArchdemonXIII) #16

I’d say underbarrel because otherwise front grip and laser sight would likely be on every weapon. You’d have to add an under mount for handguns, or alternatively under for SMG/AR, Sight for pistol.

Also, LAM is a sight accessory in Crysis 2? That’s f’n wack.

(iezza) #17

Yeah, in single player it makes you zoom in your hip to shoot as a laser, but online you can use ironsights with it even though it takes up a sight position.

(ArchdemonXIII) #18

That’s some BS. In Crysis the LAM was roughly the size of a 9 volt battery and side mounted so you could still have a scope and a grenade launcher. Now the more advanced tech of Crysis 2 has apparently yielded a LAM that’s as bulky as the first gen units… in the age of nanotech. Man WTF. That’s worse than Doom marines not being able to simultaneously wield a weapon and a flashlight.

(iezza) #19

you can have a scope and a noobtube. But no incendary ammo so you do go down 1 attachment spot, sor tof.

(ArchdemonXIII) #20

I don’t mind that for MP… it’s a balance issue. And in the first crysis I got more kills with melee than I ever did with explosives. It’s just the principle of the matter. In the first game I usually carried my SCAR configured for single target, mid range sniping(assault scope, silencer, dart attachment) and the AK configured for open hostility(LAM, GL, Incendiary). Then again I’m betting Crysis 2 by virtue of setting won’t be as conducive to my playstyle of aggressive 1 by 1 attrition. I loved doing stuff like letting a patrol pass and then using speed to bolt out of cover, grab the last guy in line by the throat and then disappear into the bush with him before his allies could see me (predator style, baby).
