Neither, the whole question is wrong: “Matchmaking” should be about bringing the right people together for full games, REGARDLESS of what the game-mode is.
Whether you’re put into a friendly-fire server or not should depend on what choices you made when entering the matchmaking system. (There’s just not much to choose yet, such as how the only symmetric game-mode is stopwatch.)
If you think one mode or the other will not get played… well, make it an option and we’ll see.
I can agree after 4 conditions:
-Many players
-Good anti-troll and anti-grief system
-Good types of banning for players doing FF grief from gold penalty,banning from the game or matchmaking to even perm ban
-Add the option to the server creator and matchmaking to find with or without it.
I’m for FF-On ASAP.
The whole point of the competive mode is to allow teams and random players to play the game in a competive setting aside from tournaments and clanmatches. That means the closer to tournament rules the better.
Also knowing from other games FF-On has a huge impact on gameplay especially stuff alot of people grief about right now (less spam, less spray and pray).
Furthermore waiting with enabling FF-On means that more people will complain about it when you do the switch since FF-Off was the default mode.
So I say add FF-On and if there are problems with too much trolling make the anti griefing system a priority.

I just wrote a long reply going into some detail as to why FF can’t be optional for ranked matchmaking… but then it occurred to me that we are probably not talking about the same thing. I wish the thread author would have specified what matchmaking they are talking about. As it is, the discussion (and vote) seems to have little value because people interpret the question differently.
The most sensible choice is to have FF always on in competitive (ranked) matchmaking and FF always off in casual (quick play) matches. Custom servers can have an option for it. If you make it optional for matchmaking, then if anything it could be an option for quick play (which I would not call “matchmaking” since it just puts you into an FFA server, but it can be seen that way).
From what I can tell by what the devs are saying, this is more or less what they are planning to do.
If you don’t like FF, then of course you are not a competitive player anyway since all tournaments and such already play with FF on.
Right now cups are played with FF on and that makes them a huge fun blast! They have to care what their teammates do even more with those nades/strikes and guns out there!

i dont give a shit if there is FF i just want a option to have it disabled so i don’t have to play with FF if i dont want to its not just me who doesn’t like FF what is so bad about having the option to turn FF off or why make it possible so no one can play with it off.

I fucking hate friendly fire, regardless of whether I can control myself I can’t control my team mates. They’ll jump into the line of fire or shoot me for giggles.
It’s frustrating, I really don’t want to have to put up with that.
Friendly fire for bullets is ok but friendly fire for explosives? Oh come on now.
