Hey
How can you make a river that drags the player with it?
I’ve been thinking about having invisible brushes that moves it the direction of the flow, but is that the only way?

actually I think it isn’t possible, you could of course make movers that push the players but it wouldn’t be a good way imho… already pondered about that one myself some time ago
isnt there a force_push or summat ???
im sure on one of the custom maps (beserk???) when the water is flowing in the tunnel u get sucked into the corner
or a mover with a texture that a player can move thru but will cause drag (water ??may loose its properties when moving)
one idea: if you can stand in the water you could try a slip-shader in direction of the flow!
Use target_push, several of them that pushes the player in the direction u want. Thats how it was done back in the old days of Half-Life mapping!
script movers would work , but remember to hide them when they get near the end of the river, not much fun to be gibbed by the river!
no, im serious, ive been pushed back on several occasions in oasis just as the water is dropping
that’s probably because you were on a slope and when the water dumped you on it you slid, not because of any proper push effect in the water itself.
no, no push effect in the water, no slope either… can’t explain it, ive seen ithappen to other people also… can’t swim forward, and if we stop trying to swim forward, we start to move backwards.
I just tried it, but couldn’t find a place where the water would push me, once I stopped moving.
Is it a particular spot in the 2. tunnel? It’s when the water is dropping? Or does it also happen when its rising?
if you drop into the tunnel at the axis 1st spawn, and swim close to the left side, or in that area.
im some spots it’s hard to swim forward, and if u stop, u get sent back…
now with that said, it doesnt happen on every server, and when it does happen, it’s not jst me but other people on the same server also…
i dunno… can’t explain it…
Had that too a few times (mostly going through 2nd tunnel as allies while the water is still draining)… it was also mentioned in this forum I think. Maximus may be mad, but he’s not crazy!
well, that’s a good bug, add’s realism, some current you fight to swim in.
I got it to work with a trigger_multiple targeting a target_push
You can set an ‘angle’ key for the target_push entity, although it isn’t specified in radiants menu, the description of the entity mention it.
This solution stops the players forward momentum, so it isn’t realistic, but tweaking the rate of trigger_multiple and speed of target_push, you can get something that looks like something is pushing you.
If any of you would like a closer look you can download a zip with shader, map and bsp files from here: http://junk.chruker.dk/files/mapping/enemy_territory/pushing_water.zip
Having written that, I see its exactly what Drakir was talking about
Is it the same you (Drakir) is using for the cannon in Northpole? I can see you have a lot of target_push entities.
BTW I also tried having the water brush as a script_mover and having it moving. But it caused no drag on the player at all. I also tried exchanging surfaceparm water with slime and lava, but none of those seemed to work?
A script mover that isn’t solid won’t ‘push’ people that are in it (eg if you have a moving ladder someone is on, they don’t move with it).
