WARNING: Flipped triangle ??

(leifhv) #1

I’m creating my first fps map and have started out with creation of the terrain using the GTKGenSurf plugin.

I used the following parameters in GenSurf:

Extents:
X: -3027 3027
Y: -3027 3027

Divisions: x: 16 y: 16

The heightmap was a 48*64 bmp file.

(Does these values sound sensible?)

I’ve also set the following keys on the terrain entity:

terrain 1
alphamap lhv.pcx
shader lhv/lmterrain2
layers 2

I’ve also created a shader file (well, actually copied one that SD have made) and added it to shaderlist.txt

In addition to this I have selected the ‘common/terrain’ texture for the terrain…?

Anyway, the map works and looks about right but when I compile I get a lot of ‘WARNING: Flipped triangle’ messages…at least a couple of hundred I think.

If I select another normal texture for the terrain the warnings disapear but offcourse then the whole terrain gets the same texture.

Is this warning normal when working with GenSurf generated terrain or have I made any stupid mistakes here?

BTW: Thanks to SD/ID/Activision for a great game!

Thanks kyleb!

:banghead:

I feel a bit stupid now…changed it to 3024 and it worked correctly…

Select your terrain in the SD/GTK editor and press CTRL+G. Then use the brush cleanup button on the tool bar. (Its the icon with a light blue/light green arrow on it)

I have the same problem, i have selected the terrain pressed ctrl+G , and then pressed the brush cleanup button but i still get the errors.

(MadMaximus) #8

I had the same problem a few days ago, flipped triangles. Never saw that error before. But I let the map compile through meta, vis and light anyways and when I devmapped it in et, I noticed the terrain was flickering here and there. When i got back into radiant I selected my terrain ( crtl+alt+left click) and hid it, and found another layer of terrain.

I was editing terrain, making changes and I guess instead of deleting the old terrain before I imported the new one was I must have hid it instead.

After I deleted the old terrain and recompiled, no more flipped triangles.
This may not be related to your problem, but on instance of what may cause this error.

(GRouZER) #9

Well, i have deleted my terrain by doing csg-substract.
On all the planes of the terrain where i have substracted, is the terrain texture, could that be it?

And what is an alternative for removing terrain for example, in a building?

(rgoer) #10

By doing csg-subtract, you have ensured that your map will never, ever, ever, compile properly.

Deleting/modifing every terrain brush 1 by 1 is alooot of work, can’t it be done easier???

(MadMaximus) #12

by deleting terrain, you mean the stuff that will never be seen? like under a floor/building ect?

(MadMaximus) #13

oh, i see what you mean. well, the way i delete the terrain stuff i dont need ( under floor’s buildings ect… ) is i make a brush that goes from the inside edge of the terrain to be snuffed on all 4 sides… making shure that i dont touch anything i want to keep ( i hide all the stuff around it 1st, the sky and floor til they are wide open ). Make the brush higher that your terrain and lower also, select touching, and once its all selected, hit the backspace key. terrain is gone and so is the brush u made to select it all in the 1st place. but i only do that at the end when the terrain is all done.
If it will never be seen and removing parts of it affects the map in no other way than reducing map size and making it look cleaner in the editor, then i have no problem doing it.

(ljbade) #14

try using easygen to do your terrain, its much more easy. plus you can see the terrain in real time.

(GRouZER) #15

The caulk problem is solved, but when i select touching i still have to manually delete/modify brushes because of the angle of the terrain, there is not another way?

I have made the terrain with easygen
