"wallhack"

(mrfin) #1

Hello mapping types

“wallhack” is a term I have come accross that one or two people have used in emails to me about my mapping efforts. These mails are usually accompanied with screenshots whereby we can see through curved walls here and there in the map

Can someone plz shed more light on this subject for me.
Is it a hack of some sort?? and if so is it a mapping issue ie. a map bug??

much appreciated

Well, a wall hack is a cheat where you can see people through walls. Typically, other players are highlighted green/red etc, so that you can track them in the map, beyond what you could typically see.

The same term when applied to your map occurs because people are using tweaked r_subdivisions values, which control how curves are drawn, to improve their framerate. Your map has a lot of curves in it, so when people use tweaked r_subdivisions values, the curves are probably rendered with angles, which probably creates seams between a bevel and the end cap, resulting in the ability for people to look thru a tunnel face, for example, and into the tunnel.

I really wouldn’t worry about. Just realize that curves and tweaked configs result in some odd results, none of which should really beconsidered hacks or cheats.

Thanks Ifurita

I guessed it was something along these lines -

tweakers eh!!

just did a quick test and with the default r_subdivisions value of 4 it is still possible to look through the curved walls in the tunnels on bridges_beta3.

To stop this from beng possible, why not add some black walls behind the tunnels to block player’s vision if they do look through

here’s an example, looking top down the red lines would be black walls perpendicular to the tunnel wall. does that make sense or is it not possible to do?

With proper construction, you should never get such gaps.

Compiling with -patchmeta can also avoid the problem.

Trying to patch up the gaps with textured brushes is a bad to fix this problem.

You dont get into that trouble if you don’t use curves and caps. Doing that kind of stuff manually get you less TRIS, looks still good and nobody can look through. For examples: look at The River II. I didn’t use any curves or caps, neither for the round tunnels nor the ceilings in buildings or the curved doorways.

Trying to patch up the gaps with textured brushes is a bad to fix this problem.

If you are at that point, you really should build the curves by hand… in the worst case just make the curve, then re-construct it with brushwork right next to it so you can see where the radiant put the edges of the curve.

Sorry for ressurecting this old thread, but there is a bug with curved patches. You can stand next to the curve, and then hit the lean key. On Battery this can make you see what is going on outside the back door.

Edit:
I had written Radar before, but I meant Battery

I put a clip brush around my curve to keep people from putting their heads inside.
