VoIP-How to enticing/lure people to use it?

(H0RSE) #101

I was going through some older posts of Rahdo, and I stumbled upon something that seems to solve the whole voip on/off problem, and how you won’t need to entice anyone to use it:

First of all, a little more about the ‘default’ voip setting. This is effectively a server setting in our ‘standard’ match, which is what the game puts you in if you simply say “I’d like to play the next mission in my storyline online, please.” Same as no FF. so players who just want to jump in and play online with no hassles, they choose the “next mission” option, and boom, they don’t hear anyone calling them f******, they don’t have **** shooting them in the back, and they have a good time. Are they missing some of what makes multiplayer great? Yes, but they’re having a good time.

for pretty much every single one of you guys on this board, I suspect that simple “take me to the next mission” option will not be good enough, and you’ll all instead opt for the “take me to a server browser” choice. once there, you can find missions where voip is on by default (for everyone), FF is on, player ranks are restricted or open, high level abilities are allowed or disallowed, etc.

I expect the majority of console players will opt for the former (the standard ‘friendly’ matches), and the majority of PC players will opt for the later (the let me play the game without restrictions, I’m a big boy, I can handle it matches). So hopefully everyone will be satisfied…

Regarding voip, I feel this is a better way to go, because doing the other thing (allowing individuals to selectively turn voip on or off) works at a disadvantage to everyone, including the players who want to speak. What good does it do you to talk into your mike and give strategy/tips, if, for all you know, half your team has manually decided to turn voip off. you might think a player is a complete asshat by ignoring your repeated requests for ammo, but in fact, it’s just that they’ve turned voip off because someone called them a n***** in the past, so they don’t take chances anymore. and they have no idea you’re asking for ammo.

a weird system where “maybe” sometimes people talk, and “maybe” sometimes other people can hear them, but no one is every sure about either, doesn’t help anyone. a more strict system where everyone knows that either a) no one is talking or hearing, or b) everyone can talk and everyone can hear, and letting players gravitate to the choice they prefer, strikes me as a bit clearer all around.

and if you opt for the “I’d prefer not to be called a m*********** again, thanks” server option, you can still team play because our auto-chatter system automatically says 90% of the common stuff players say to each other anyway. and for the 10% that it can’t cover, you can either a) step up to the ‘non-standard’ servers, or b) open up local voice channels with just the people you want to talk to.

It will be a server setting, not just an individual player setting. If you want to use it, just play games with “voip on” server settings. You won’t need to “entice” anyone, since everyone you’re playing with has it enabled.

Good. Those are some points we’ve been making. Also good regarding ability restriction options.

(BomBaKlaK) #103

add a limiter !!
under a limit you dont emit sound and when you pass over people ear you !

like we fnd in mumble for exemple !

that kind of option in game can be very usefull !
no more mumble or teamspeak !
all in one !

(Crytiqal) #104

you use a button!
so its like, push to talk!!

that way, people who don’t know how to properly set their loudness
(like you for “exemple”)!!
won’t bother the sensitive ears!!!

The TAW server makes it pretty enticing to turn that mic on. Great folks.

Hm i play a HL2 mod fortress forever, and I use my mic in 2 situations clan matches or to socialize in public servers : ), when some dude starts to spam music or whatever i just mute him not to hard, but I prefer to have voice on by default to socialize a bit, when theres no one speaking i start to wonder if im playng vs bots lol.

(tokamak) #107

PC’s and consoles are a different setting. For consoles it’s usually a godgiven right to swear vocally at your opponents where as over PC’s you only open your mic to say relevant stuff.

Therefore, VOIP default off on consoles, VOIP default on on PC’s.

(Mustang) #108

I hate using push to talk
Sensitivity options work perfectly fine
Otherwise I’d just leave it always on, which sucks

I find voip works best in games with a small number of players like L4D or the zombies mode in COD. With larger numbers i tend to ignore the voice chatter because alot of its pointless and not aimed at me.

I would love the voice comms to only be heard by people within a radius of yourself, so any tactical information is relevant to those who hear it. This might get confusing though i guess :open_mouth:

(H0RSE) #110

I don’t see a point in “enticing” anyone to use anything, VOIP or otherwise. If players want to use or do something in the game, they will. I don’t think we need a guy in a van with kittens and candy waving them over.

As for VOIP in Brink - the fact that enabling it seems to ensure that games you join will have it enabled for everyone (as my previous post shows) There really is no reason to progress it further, since you won’t need to worry about players maybe having voice on or not.

(BioSnark) #111

But, of course, that’s not just exactly what the xp dynamic mission system is also trying to do — team coordination.

This system existed in ut2k4 as I recall.

Yes, but you might have died at one spot by an enemy, and before you respawn you can see your teammate walking in the same “trap”.
But then you respawn and you are out of the target radius and you cannot warn him anymore ;).

Rather have normal teamvoice chat then eheh

(tokamak) #113

UT2k4 was bizarre. I could broadcast music I was playing in the background to everyone without using a microphone. I still don’t see how that worked.

(INF3RN0) #114

I only use fire team voip :).

(Crytiqal) #115

Wasn’t fireteam voip on by default anyway?

(ChickenDude123) #116

what is VoIP

(Crytiqal) #117

/facepalm’

Did you even read one post in this thread?

(madoule) #118

yep, thats what i read too.

what is VoIP

and the discussion comes to an abrupt halt

(LyndonL) #119

How about someone actually answer the question rather than just laugh at them?

Voice Over IP. Basically means you can talk to eachother in game with your microphones.
