VOIP Fireteam

(sparky) #1

I have what may seem like a dumb question to those that use it but you have to understand, I use TeamSpeak, or Ventrilo so I never had to learn anything about the voip system.

I was pubbing one day and someone from my side starts talking to me, telling me to revive him. So I check my teamspeak and there’s no one on. This person assumed I’d know his voice or that I even see him down so that I could revive him. At this point, I am very confused because in the first place; how is he communicating into my headset? I never use the term, but I think it is appropriate here— WTF.

I don’t want people I am pubbing with to talk at me. If I am trying to play objective, that’s one thing, but if I am pubbing in order to mess around, or I am pubbing just to practice headies, or even if I feel like pubbing to melee the freaking walls, I have the right not to have to revive anyone.

Now that I’ve vented my angst, my question is, how do I turn off voip or fireteam chat, whatever it’s called. I don’t want anyone talking at me that I don’t approve.

I feel violated, lol.

There are two variables for the sound volume which are by default turned down to-6dB. So you shouldnt hear them loud anyway…

Type in the console s_volume and press tab, you should see the fitting cvars. Set them to … -20?

Ok I can turn that down to -99dB, np. But really, I’d like to know how to totally turn it off instead of turn it down. I would prefer allowing people permission to approach my greatness upon invitation. Does this work like a fireteam where you can accept or refuse?

Options > VOIP ?
My wish for voip is actually for the name of the person speaking to appear on my hud

The displayed name would be great, really.

Its a good thing to have people communicate… To get some teamwork together… Coordinating… It somehow disturbing to me that you dont like it.

Teamwork is good, no disagreement. But there are times when I just get off of work and want to get some headshots and not revive every noob who runs into deathzone. How fun is it when you only toss needles for 20 minutes? I think you will agree you’d want to do some shooting too? I wouldn’t mind if I’m backing up guys that know what they are doing, but during a pub you get people who are shot in the middle of an objective area because they were getting the phone.

lul?

I was wondering about this. I bought my first headset/mic yesterday (after years of people on ET:QW yelling at me to get one) and I tried using VOIP in Brink with my wife but we could barely hear each other. I was trying to find the volume control for VOIP in the game’s option menu…

I think this is not only preferable but required.

I was checking out the variables (thanks for the tip btw), I assume s_volume_VoIPIn_dB (-6.0 by default) is the volume control for incoming VOIP and s_volume_VoIPOut_dB (-6.0 by default) is the volume for your outgoing VoIP, but what does s_volume_VoIPActive_dB (-20.0 by default) do?

If you hit enter on these CVAR you should get a discription. I think this is how much the other sounds are tuned down when you hear VOIP incomming.

I don’t get it - if he doesn’t want to hear anyone in fireteam, why joining the fireteam in the first place? Maybe I missed something…

(sparky) #11

Yes you missed that he was pubbing and all of a sudden he was surprised by someone who just started to talk to him. He didn’t know he was in a fireteam, it surprised him that he found himself part of something he didn’t want to be a part of. It surprised me as well.

could have been team voip either
