vis compile stopps after "clusters"

hey there,

I only made a few changes on my map since the last compile but now my vis stage somehow does not want to compile anymore. Its starting as usual but then listing thousands of “clusters” which view XX numbers of others. Before this is finished it simply closes the compile and goes to the next stage (light). So what is up with these “clusters” ? I’ll attatch the logfile of my vis compilation:

Is it broken, or just being verbose?

it is broken. the bat-window of the compiler in radiant closes and goes to the next step and my q3map2GUI simply disconnects from the stage and goes on to the next one.

When I check r_showtris 2 ingame there are no portals used just as if I didnt compile vis at all.

Almost same thing happens for me on bigger maps. The difference is that when the batch window closes, the compile is finished (atleast almost) and the logging stops after quite many clusters listed. Vis works great tho.

So I think it compiles, but doesn’t log to the end like it does for me, and possibly your vis is leaking so you don’t notice a difference. Does your r_speeds chance? Have you tried r_lockpvs 1 (let’s you see which faces were drawn from the portal you were standing in)?

when I enable r_speeds 1 and move around the console messages change but I never worked with this command so can’t tell what its saying^^

mh also no change at r_lockpvs 1 either with showtris 0 1 2 . When exactly should something change here?

The map is not leaked I tested that with my bsp compile, so apparently its not completing the compile but the vis is also not working… which is a no-go =(

r_showtris 1 draws triangles over every surface in sight

r_showtris 2 draws triangles over every surface that got rendered --> 2 is the correct command to see if vis is compiled

Your structurally brushwork is too complex. This number should be low hundreds (200>300) for a good size map

mh my mapping partner didnt do much detail brushes in the latest updates but didnt bother to fix that yet. Might be the problem but actually I already did quite well detail optimisation along with hints etc… Dersaidin persuaded me :stuck_out_tongue: Will try still…

I also tried to use a high blocksize value just to see whether it were too much portals but it didnt help aswell.

edit:
Also checked that there are no compile errors or warnings in the BSP phase. No entities leaked or whatever, mapcoords are correct and I scaled the blocksize command to 4096. The only structural brushes I have are those surrounding my rooms or the outside world, there is not much to optimise to be honest.

Can I make curves to detail? always when I try nothing happens so I thought they’re not possible to change?

now that I did some random updates and changes the compile still stops at some point but the vis works in the .bsp file. No clue why but its working for now .x

Patchmeshes are not used by vis so there is no “detail” or “structural” state for them. They are just completely ignored as if they were detail brushes. That’s why you need to seal meshes from the void using caulk behind them.
