View Bobbing

(acQu) #1

I saw an option in the control panel where you can turn off view bobbing. However, there are still some camera view bobbings when performing certain actions, i.e. when throwing a medpack.

Will these type of viewbobs be connected to the available control panel option in the future ? I have my problems with these kind of camera movements aka they make me feel uncomfortable.

In W:ET i can remember the only similar type of camera movement was when walking crouched. But i thought it was acceptable more or less. But with more frequent actions such as changing weapons, throwing medpacks, knifing, it becomes a noticable factor imo.

all bob should be removable via ingame-optons menu imo. I want a smooth look in the game without any bobing and animations that make the screen anxious.

Will all be options eventually
Will all be options eventually :)
This would be awesome, at least in some cfg options.
I never realized that people are so desperate about it, i think it depends also on the generation im born in.

People like me doesnt really care about such stuff BUT options to customize YOUR gameplay experience at any time is much appreciated, and unfortunately very less seen in other games. Maybe people can discover with DB their best gameplay configuration. Nowadays people want to customize even more than ever imo. This is another aspect of the game which will make it stand out.

The more options, the more tastes of a gameplay will be covered. Really Old School, to todays common FPS “standards”. Everybody will be happy

Awesome.

REVOLUTIONARY xD

Great. I think noone likes this, but as Tast1c said, maybe it really depends on the generation. Some statistics about how players feel about it would be interesting. Probably this is similar to gravity of some sort. You get born into it and take it for granted. Or maybe like a sound you do not hear until it turns off, then you start realizing it was there and that it actually was annoying  … ah getting too blabla, but nice to hear it will be in the (or more or less connected to the existing) options

(Hundopercent) #8

Happy to hear we will have the option to control this. Weapon bob etc is annoying to play with.

(Mustang) #9

Weapon bob I don’t mind so much, but the whole view thing is dizzying and annoying.

I wonder who will turn on any bobbing voluntarily…
Who needs it and what is its purpose in life?

Some people really really like a cinematic feel to games and view bob is one of those things that provides it. Without it some people just feel like nothing is happening. Many modern action films rely entirely on fast camera cuts and pans to add a sense of drama when there isn’t actually that much going on (click through to almost any part of this clip from Vin Diesel’s XXX to see what I mean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEIqCe_0OX0 ) Far Cry 3, BF3 & Crysis 3 do a lot of this sort of thing and it does make demos and marketing videos have more punch.

For the most part though, camera bobs are just visual noise, so there is a very strong case for removing all non-game effecting camera animation for players who prefer a clean and crisp feel to their games (or suffer horrendous motion sickness). Hopefully we’ll do a pass on this stuff before Beta to give players more options over how they want to play.

Yes, i have not played Crysis 3 myself, but i have seen from VoDs that there a lot of these viewbobs in the game both in cut scenes and actually ingame. I think it always depends from case to case and mostly i don’t like it.

As for the Vin Diesel film: well, i am not a fan of this. It makes me pretty motion sick, it really screws with my mind. Gladly these types of effects are not always used. But certainly for short cutscenes it is acceptable, but actually ingame it becomes pretty annoying in my opinion.

Well, now I know only 1 person who likes this - namely one above - acQu

For me it is exactly as mentioned above - unneeded extra noise, distracting from actual action, disturbing the aim and surroundings changes perception, adding nothing to my feeling of realism and submerging - it feels so fake and wrong, that it’s annoying. Persons in real life do not really bob head while walking and especially while running - it gets smoothened by your all body. Also the remains of bobbing are probably subconsciously removed by the visuals-brain interaction so one doesn’t even notice slight bobbings. But most prominently, the occasional bobbing in rl is not repetetive - the sudden bobbings occur randomly, unevenly in frames of space and time - I yet have to see games with such type of bobbing (perhaps some have already).
But I personally need none of this and would hate if it were obligatory. I actually do not know anyone who’d want this (-1) and I know many players.

Oh well, but then we are all different people in the end

(acQu) #14

No :frowning: I said it depends from case to case and also on the timeframe, frequency, and intensity. It is many-fold, but i generally hate it. In a short cutscene it is ok, but not ingame and very frequent …

P.S. i once saw a docu on dogs vs human perception. As was stated by Ashog above: the bobbing actually gets smoothed out by the human brain, but the dog does not have such a thing, so when he walks it actually will look similar to these effects. We are not dogs, right ? I mean, i always perceive this kind of effect as only enjoyable by hardcore chips-eating. dru… oh noe, not gonna say that

(Ashog) #15

Yeah, why implementing bobbing for every single game spending valuable programming resources - why not just inventing a gaming bobbing chair - should bob as you like and when you like for any game you like, even for games like Audiosurf and Age of empires

(maxxxxlol) #16

zero view bob and being able to turn off the gun completely. I can only dream

(ice---) #17

a option to disable view bob would be very nice in future

(en2ie) #18

View bobbing is something I prefer to have disabled, for as you say - a smoother feeling experience.

I really like a small amount of motion blur though, it seems to make games easier on my eyes without really putting me at a disadvantage.
