Use of .mp3

(Shownie) #1

I did the search and couldn’t find any related topics.

So what I wonder is, can I use .mp3 audio files inside Wolf: ET? I don’t really remember if I heard anything about copyright violence or something, or if it isn’t supported in the game.

So my questions are;

Can I use .mp3 audio files inside Wolf: ET?
What exact audio data is used in the stock audio in Wolf: ET?

Thanks in advanced!

Only .wav files are used inside stock Wolf:ET. Maybe with projects like openwolf you can use .ogg or .mp3, no idea but it’s possible. And .ogg is better to me, ID software uses it without problems with copyright on Doom3.

I might say something false but I think that’s it.

So what you are saying is that mp3 files aren’t working inside stock ET? Can it be done with a MOD or is it ENGINE related?

Thanks!

(eQuilibrium) #4

BackSnip3 is correct - use of mp3 is unfortunately not available with the stock ET. I’m fairly sure it can be done through a mod since playing sounds is handled on the client?

(BackSnip3) #5

Probably possible with a mod but as he asked mp3 maybe needs a license or something, dunno.

(Shownie) #6

Well, about license, if it is about the authour there wont be any problem since I will have all the rights to use it.

But what data/settings should the vanilla et sounds have?

(eQuilibrium) #7

I believe that you can freely use mp3 in an open/free project.

Vanilla ET has uncompressed PCM .wav

I forgot the khz… I believe it was 44500 stereo?

You can not. You run the risk of litigation from various companies for patent infringement. This was why Ogg Vorbis was invented.

(eQuilibrium) #9

I stand corrected, I forgot about the whole patent affaire

(donmichelangelo) #10

Signs what lakersforce says.

If you don’t care about patent infringments then there is an unofficial mp3 patch of a ioquake3 committer available which you would have to adjust to the wolfet engine. however due to the already mentioned reasons it would be just something to experiment with and your own use, because you would probably run into patent troubles if you release something official with it.

have a look for some of the wolfet engine projects like openwolf, i think dushan made openal working so that you can use .ogg files.

Alright, so if I understand correctly I can’t use mp3 even if I made them myself?

The engine part is not in any interests, since I want to include the sounds in my project for vanilla et

(Runeforce) #12

Not in any gpl’ed versions of the program (without running the risks.)
The engine part is not in any interests, since I want to include the sounds in my project for vanilla et :)
For use with a gpl’ed version, convert to Ogg. I don’t know whether the original engine supports mp3

Check again  You will be pleasantly surprised. Not all MP3 libraries are property. I know several MPEG Audio Layer III (MP3) encoders what are licensed under the LGPL or some variant of GPL (I believe v2). I just don’t see any point of supporting MP3 at this moment, except if you want more features.
Currently whole advantages of using different format for sound is better compression and smaller size.
About using OGG as base for sounds … MP3 is well known standard, much people need to be educated about OGG, for me it don’t have to be bad thing.

I did really learn something from this thread. Never knew about that ogg/mp3 licence stuff. Thanks

(Shownie) #15

I really don’t understand the license thing here, but anyway thanks for answers!

Over to the next question then. For my project I will make new sounds, with as high quality as I can. What is max quality settings for a sound. And which sounds should be mono and which should be stereo?

Thanks!

(acQu) #16

As far as i understood now is that you can not add support for mp3 without risking to get in trouble.

(Shownie) #17

Should have done this for the beginning…

Taken directly from http://mp3licensing.com

 1. Do I need a license to distribute mp3 or mp3surround encoded content?

Yes. A license is needed for commercial (i.e., revenue-generating) use of mp3/mp3PRO in broadcast systems (terrestrial, satellite, cable and/or other distribution channels), streaming applications (via Internet, intranets and/or other networks), other content distribution systems (pay-audio or audio-on-demand applications and the like) or for use of mp3/mp3PRO on physical media (compact discs, digital versatile discs, semiconductor chips, hard drives, memory cards and the like).

However, no license is needed for private, non-commercial activities (e.g., home-entertainment, receiving broadcasts and creating a personal music library), not generating revenue or other consideration of any kind or for entities with associated annual gross revenue less than US$ 100 000.00.

So I guess we can all kiss this good bye
