Urgent Need of Assistance (Blocking Triangles)

(AKPiggott) #1

I have a major problem and Emon suggested I post it here because ydnar is apparently very knowledgeable about these sort of issues.

I have made a huge Jedi Outcast SP level, and it’s 99% complete. Before I release it, I need to resolve performance issues. In outdoor areas in the level I am getting framerates of less than 10, and here’s why:

The building in front is sealed with structrual brushes. There is an area portal on the door but it doesn’t appear to be working correctly. Here’s an aerial shot of the area in case that helps:

This problem doesn’t just occur here though. Whenever I am outside a building, the game insists on loading near enough every triangle in the level. I can’t find any way of blocking this, it’s proving a serious threat to the release of a level that I’ve spent nigh on a year working on.

THe area-portal in the door will not work, because it’s no closed room.

It looks like it’s a kind of wall so all the stuf behind it will be drawn…
Try to put a brush with a sky-texture from the three signs up to the top of your sky.

_________Top of skybox

<--Engine "looks" over your wall and area-portal don't work
  |- |
  | |
  | |
  | | <--Door wit areaportal.

_________
     |
     | <--Put additional skybrush here to close it.
     |
   |---|

I hope you understand what i mean. If not, try reading some tutoirals about vis-blocking and proper use of area-portals.

EDIT: Nice shots btw. I like the colors.

Thanks… I thought it might be something like this… do you literally mean brushes with the skybox texture on?

You can also place a hint brush that crosses near the top of the wall, which must be structural, or have a structural caulk brush inside of it, and two hint faces angled at 45 degrees that intersect at the top of the wall.

For my own reference, could you ASCII art that, ydnar? I’m having trouble understanding what you mean…

By the way, AK, I’m going to be gone until Sunday, so you’ll be without me on this till then.

Hey Fiesling, your advice didn’t actually help the area portals, but it has improved the framerate, so thanks for that.

ydnar, I haven’t actually worked with hint brushes yet. Can you descrive (in the most basic form of info) what they are please?

Emon, great! I’m more than likely going to run into many problems that may require your input before then… according to sod’s law that is…

Thanks again Fiesling for your info… some areas the framerate has gone from mid 20s to low 60s, so thanks a lot.
