Untitled WIP

(KillerKind) #1

No title on this one yet, only a few hours work atm. Though I plan to expand the terrain, it will probably be TDM only. I think it would be nice if allies could parachute in on spawn. Any suggestions on how to implement this would be appreciated.

thats a et map? looks like bf1942

(Ragnar_40k) #3

I havent tested this yet, but 2 ideas spring into my mind:
(1) Use some kind of invisible hillside which “hangs” in the air. Allies spawn, slide down the invisible hill, and the last few meters they just fall down. Since the hill is flying in the air it wont hinder movement after the drop. The only problem i see is, that this might block bulletts etc (esp. panzer and airstrikes), so you should place it somewhere in a corner.

(2) Another way could be to use water to slow down the fall. Small (invisible) cuboids of water. The player will fall through, but it will slow down the fall.

Water is not a good idea even if it’s invisible… it’ll make a sloshing sound. Unless you modify the shader.

Instead use a cushion brush to stop hurting from a fall.

Cushion is defined as:

textures/common/cushion
{
	qer_nocarve
	qer_trans 0.5
	surfaceparm nodamage
	surfaceparm nodraw
	surfaceparm nomarks
	surfaceparm trans
}

It won’t mark or damage or draw and is transparent.

That way you could simply put the spawns in mid-air.

Oh and btw, nice looking map :smiley:

Just by looking at those screenies I can tell this map will have a very nice feel to it. Are those cliffs climbable? They don’t look awfully steep. And please, don’t make it TDM… add some objectives… I don’t care how simple they are.

BTW MadJack that texture is awesome, I had no idea cushion did that… now watch me abuse it… :smiley:

(KillerKind) #7

Thanks, I’ll try the cushion method first. Another issue would be how to attach a parachute model to player, only while falling.

The cliffs are climbable.

Also, started work on a trench war terrain. Not sure if this will be part of the map above, or a different map altogether.

(MuffinMan) #8

gerbil has tried that with an other way, do a search on rtcw.co.uk for it to read the whole thing

in short he makes a box, inside the spawn points (in air) -> after player spawn the boxes move down, taking the player with them, synchronously the parachutes move down, right before hitting the ground the box either dissapears or opens up at bottom, parachute disappears as well

btw: is it possible to set gravity specific to a certain area? I know it can be set per player (as a powerup in a mod) or for all as a rcon setting

i dont know why but when i look at this map i get the feeling a t-rex is about to come stomping round the corner, looks good

(TFate) #10

It’s probably due to the lack of industrial buildings and the high level of palm trees, b_b. And the volcano like rock on the hills…

Yeah he should fill those trenches with lava and put a volcano in the distance!
