Unlocks only in Solo Challenges?

(Gearbox) #1

While this has been posted elsewhere on this forum, I felt like creating a new thread with a positive, open atmosphere.

I am getting frustrated with the challenge mission unlocks being a single player only mode.

This seems counter to the hyped features of the game. Namely:

  1. Seamless cooperative interaction.
  2. The ability to play however you would like to.
  3. Gradually upgrading characters no matter what form of gameplay you’re in.

The solo only method of unlocking weapons and weapon attachments, especially in challenges that force you into specific roles, runs counter to all three of these key features much espoused by the developers.

I am curious about why this decision was made, and how difficult it would be to change it.

I would at least like to be able to unlock my weapons and mods in a cooperative setting with my friends.

did you go past the warm-up round in the challenges? It’s only there when you play the challenges co-op.

(SockDog) #3

As noted you can do the challenges in co-op.

I believe the logic behind putting this stuff there though was to force players to familiarise themselves with important aspects of the game without impacting online matches. Don’t view it as part of the game proper but more of a expansive and very interactive tutorial system with rewards.

I did the first challenge with a buddy and we went through it all and didn’t get any of the unlocks so is that how its supposed to be? I tried tower defense seemed pretty tough by myself.

I also haven’t had any unlocks when I do it with multiple people. Also I’ve realized I can’t seem to get more than one star by myself either.

So do you really not get any unlocks if doing the challenges in coop mode or where people just doing the objectives in warmup mode? I am interested in completing the challenges with a friend once the game unlocks in EU and would like to know this.

You only get the unlocks in solo challenges. It’s a bit weird, but I can see why it was done. The challenges are more like tutorials, teaching you the key concepts of the game.

It’s hard to do 2-star challenges solo (PS3 here) but it’s not THAT hard. Just keep at it.

Tower Defense and Be More Objective should be the only ones you have real difficulty with.

Tower Defense, it’s important to remember that the waves will start almost immediately after you kill the last person in the wave before. I have most of my difficulty with the 3rd stage—I can get all 6 down, but it’s close. Then the next wave starts before I’m really ready (out of ammo, turret’s down, mine’s gone) and then I die before I can really get anything going. So if you can, try to leave 1 guy alive while you repair, drop mines, and go to the command post to resupply.

Be More Objective… try a lot. There’s no easy way here, IMO.

Play as a Medium.

Sprint to the plant, get the bomb on the door and then high-tail it to cover. Check the bomb every few seconds to shoot engineers, but stick behind cover.

The Repair objective is basically luck. Sometimes you’ll get it easily, sometimes the enemy team will be aces and you can’t even touch it.

The Hack objective is probably the hardest, but at the same time I can give tips on this one. When you start the hack, put the box up, and IMMEDIATELY go over to the command post side of the pillar. For whatever reason, you won’t see many (I may have seen 1) bots trying to get you over there, and generally your AI team-mates will hold the engies off alright.

For the data-key stuff, just rush it. Right before you get to the objective, look around to make sure there’s nobody standing right there who can melee you down, and then circle-strafe the objective while you’re entering it into the terminal. Easy-peasy on this one, compared to the Hack and Repair objectives.

The time limit on Escort Duty is long enough to take it slow and pick your shots, so the only thing I would worry about there is running out of ammo (if you’re comfortable that you’ve got enough time, consider capturing the command post halfway through and going back to resupply if you get worried about ammo).

That is kind of disappointing. Not a big issue but still disappointing.

Apparently it also teaches you that teamwork is key by showing you how difficult the game is with crappy teammates. The AI they give you (which rarely buffs you) doesn’t really work as a team with you - but the AI team you play against does an extremely effective job of guarding the objectives.

They teach you teamwork by frustrating the heck out of you.

Played through the solo challenges today to get the unlocks, and it just felt like work. I was so glad when it was over.
