Unit 13 wants your questions!

When Brink is released, is there a competition mod already or will the comp mod be released later?
Did SD have a look at Mods of ETQW/ET to gain some ideas for an official mod?

(AnthonyDa) #22

What makes BRINK different from others game?

I’m would think that their intentions would be to have the game be “competition ready” out of the box. Releasing a mod along side it is like saying, “our game’s broken…but this will fix it!”

(Kl3ppy) #24

No, i dont think so. Releasing a comp mod is a good idea, just have a look at ETQW. What would u say, if u play 4on4 and then every Strogg takes a hyperblaster? Just leave the normal game but make it possible that u can restrict some things. On normal Pub, u dont need to. The game is balanced for 8on8 and not for 4on4. For a 4on4 match u may need some restriction and if SD is offering this, then there is no need for an mod and the game is perfect. If not, i hope hannes and his team will do a BrinkProMod

(AnthonyDa) #25

Not going to happen dude …

(tokamak) #26

That they eventually will run out of ammo?

It’s called server settings. It can be done out of the box - you don’t need a mod for that.

Considering ET:QW has an early version of the Megatexture technology, does Brink also implement it and how close does it come to id’s Rage?

(Kl3ppy) #29

If so, great, if not, mod is needed and when SD delivers the mod, noone is needed to create a comp mod

:penguin:

(Voxie) #30

I’ll chip in: What is the most humorous bug that’s crept up during playtesting and would you mind giving us an example of a creative strategy (e.g. a clever way to use a certain ability) that no one outside the studio has heard about?

(ED209) #31

The bugs sometimes make it into the final game. I even killed somebody in game once by shooting the wheels off a Trojan… but no demo… Click on SLED link for demonstration

(tokamak) #32

Brink uses virtual texturing (just like Rage). Similar but not quite.

These are my questions. I think I know the answers to some questions but I am not sure.

1)Did the animations get bumped up to 60 Hz? The animations in ETQW quickly wore on my friends. If the game will “appear” smoother then Paul should mention this in every damn interview.

2)Hud- Will the “+x HP” that appears in the E3 vids when an enemy is shot appear in the retail? What about the enemy health bar?

3)I noticed a lot of possible weapon options in the E3 vids. Are you finding it challenging to balance all of the weapons/gear yet still give each weapon personality?

4)Is it difficult balancing the health of the different classes (heavy versus scout)?

5)Will mapping and modding tools be released?

6)IIRC, one of the problems with creating custom ETQW maps in the early days was redirect support for downloading the megatexture files. Will this be improved with Brink?

7)The current trend with the PC versions of some games is the remove the in game console function or severely neuter the console. Will the PC retail version of Brink allow the console in game (~)?

8)Ok, but what about config files. Some devs/publishers are also limiting config file manipulation. Will you limit config file manipulation with Brink?

9)Will there be ragdoll? The knock against ragdoll in a game with medics was that if bodies roll down hills then they would be difficult to revive. BF:BC2 has pretty much poo pooed that argument imo. For the record, I am merely asking the question. I am neither for nor against ragdolls.

10)Is the sound we heard at E3 representative of what you want in the retail version? Tbh, what I heard from the E3 vids reminded me of the Wolfenstein(2009) multiplayer and any reminder of the Wolfenstein MP is not a good thing.

11)One of the things you have touted is seamless online and OFFLINE play. How smart are the enemy AI? Can they learn? Do they become predictable the more you play with them? Will the PC bots be labotomized because they were written for a console?

(DarkangelUK) #34

That’s a lot of negative under-toned questions, possibly a rewording to not sound quite as pissed off about being a PC player?

(tokamak) #35

Interesting topics but yeah the wording is a bit rude.

(Apples) #36

Weirdly I found them interesting questions…

(DarkangelUK) #37

The questions are interesting, the tone isn’t.

(MadJack) #38

Wow. Politeness isn’t given to everyone I guess.

From the suggested tone of some of your questions I hope, if some are chosen, they will be severely edited.

(-Ed-) #39

What can say in a competitive mode multiplayer in Brink?

Has it been a problem the lack of bluray at the moment of Brink developed in Xbox 360?

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #40

A day later I see that my post isn’t very polite. Here’s the boiled down explanation if anybody cares.

I enjoy objective oriented games. I am passionate about these games. I want to be able to recommend this game to my friends and coworkers and get them interested in Brink since I want to play Brink with them. Right now they aren’t very interested because of some of the things I asked about. I want to be able to link to some media and tell my friends that SD has made improvements in the areas that my friends bitched about in ETQW(SD) and Wolfenstein (not SD). In short, I want an interview for veterans of the RTCW lineage of games. Even carefully crafted media would be good.

As for my tone, yes it was harsh but in my opinion it reads harsher than it was intended. I’m not backtracking. I stand by every word I wrote except “damn”. Sometimes honest opinions hurt, but when working on subjective media like a game one has to have a pretty thick skin.

Hope the interview is fun and informative no matter which questions you ask.
