Underground?

I’m working on a map that will feature a small village. I need to know how i can make a few buildings have underground tunnels. Is it possible to have one large brush as the ground, and “cut” holes in it so i can make access to the tunnels? Or do i need to make multiple brushes surrounding the holes? Please clear this up for me. thanks.

The process of turning that one large ground brush into tunnel entrances is going to result in multiple brushes. So yes, you will need multiple brushes

You should really be making your tunnels the same way you make any other geometry - carving into a single block can get quite messy and results in lots of invalid, corrupt or otherwise distorted faces. Unless you’re really careful you’ll end up with more polys than you need (and if you’re going to be careful building it you might as well do it the ‘correct’ way :)).

Once you’ve decided where you want the tunnels to connect to and from, your best bet is probably to start by making the entrances and exits, and slowly start adding brush geometry to join them together.

You’ll probably find it easiest to roughly block out the tunnels to get the shape/size, and then slowly work through replacing the block brushes with detailed tunnel walls as necessary.

Radiant’s vertex editing is pretty shoddy, so be careful if you decide to use that - you’ll often find your brushes end up corrupted or snap out of position and produce ‘sparklies’ along your tunnel walls. The best tools to use are probably the edge manipulator and three point clipping.
