Tweaks - expectations and wishes

(JeP) #1

So, hoping that Brink will be as tweakable as the previous ET games, I was wondering what sort of tweaks, what kind of mod you’d be waiting for, you want to try soon after the game releases.
I know there are lots of details of the game we don’t know for sure yet, but still, that won’t be the first “I think the game will be that way and I’m already planing to change it”.

Fed with HUD-free gameplay vids for some time now, I know that’s one thing I will try soon. All the game seems to be enjoyable that way, with classes exclusive gloves, backpacks for enemies, auto-chat that will give us a good battlesense… And of course no red-glowing enemies. That last one is not something that bothering me, but trying the game without it, with kind of an “hardcore” feel (with still the same fire/stopping power), that’s something I’m looking forward to.

I’m kind of worried about the speed of the game, speed of movement above all. That’s something else I’d be glad to see tweaked if it’s too slow for my test. That’s just an idea that came with different gameplay vids, I expecting the game to feel more fast paced once used to it, can’t wait to try it.
That’s just an other idea though, I more excited about a HUD-free tweak.

What about you ?

Well if you have read the Edge Online interview http://www.next-gen.biz/features/balancing-on-the-brink

You can see that they talk a lot about the options they have to tweak gameplay without sending out patches, which is awesome

But I do hope that they will send out patch notes for all changes they make. Had a crappy experience with Bloops since they only made patch notes for every 10th tweak they made -.-’

Read it, and they showed a part of it in the PAX presentation slideshow,
but that seemed more like minor tweaks. One could try to make the weapons
more deadlier, more “hardcore” though, or increase a lot the time each objective
takes to be completed so that the attacking team as to be really good to nail it.

I can’t think of other idea like this, if you do, feel free to share ^^

Well if the defending team have “lives” you can also reduce that to a smaller amount to make it harder, also making medics more viable

(crazyfoolish) #5

What are the downsides of constantly tweaking level time limits based in the average amount of wins/losses?

(JeP) #6

I don’t really see one, balancing is good. But planing your attack, you often expect a certain amount of time
to do this or that… Having this tweaked each time could be really annoying, can be a set off.

I hope that in something like a month, probably less, they will set a fixed time for each objective.

I would think that they already have that fixed time, and they prollly tested it alot so far, but still room for adjustments of course

Here have a free Tapir :stroggtapir:

(light_sh4v0r) #8

There’s no such thing a a free tapir, just so you know…

(Dormamu) #9

At this moment i can only think of 1 tweak/mod-wish i would like to have: The possibility to replay the game (sp/coop) only with the head-shots registered as hits/body-shoot with 0 damage (for mp training) with or without the steam achievement

Winning or losing would only mean being slightly better or worse than average. That’s not interesting.

Also ETQW’s map Quarry has proven that the masses sometimes simply don’t know how to defend or attack a map. The ones who do know how to play shouldn’t suffer on that.

Blizzard balances Starcraft on the way experts play it, not on the way average joe goes about it.

(Linsolv) #11

But you have a set time-limit, not a ticket system. They said that a long time ago.

(Cankor) #12

They don’t, it’s not based on tickets, it’s based on time. You can die as often as you like so long as you get it done within the timeframe.

[/QUOTE]

How do you figure? If you full hold a guy for 10 minutes and win, what’s to say you coudn’t have held him for another 10? And if you beat the first objective in 2 minutes, and the clock is set at 5 minutes because that’s the average, how is that being slightly better?

The best games are the really close ones anyway, where you barely win just in the nick of time (last minute diffuse or last minute plant and defend).

(brbrbr) #13

i hope its will NOT.
at least for online gameplay.
you can mess you config in offline gaming, but no “config whoring” in online.

Sounds like console gaming is perfect for you. Config tweaking is part of PC gaming. If that isn’t to your liking you got a good alternative in console gaming.

(brbrbr) #15

sounds like fair-play if perfect for me.
as well as arguing with good-mannered persons.
“config whoring” killing competition because engine flaws, and thus providing superficial advantages to 'config whores" over rest players and thus - effectively eliminate/abuse meaning of game-play.
if anything in my liking else than smash the bones of anyone unable to keep advices for self, have alternatives in Brink game-play, its could be enter-taining. i guess.
as well as lack of ability to interrupt/tamper game engine on both client and server -sides.

(Jess Alon) #16

Will console gamers be able to play with minimal hud? I hope so. Because the glowing weapons and stuff like that I think are good enough to tell you when a buff is in effect.

net things are iffy…however I think every pc game should be customizable enough to play on low low end machines…so even college students with loans and **** can still enjoy brink

I think quakelive is a good example…

gamedevs and producers forced to “think” about whole picture, not selfish feelings/needs, in each case.
point is - anything [effectively]killing gameplay is no-go feat, whatver “cool”/handy/interesting its look/perform be.
nothing is “should” be, ingame, except FUN and fairplay.

(tokamak) #19

There’s always COD for the likes of you.

(SIiced Bread) #20

Theres always Metal Gear for the likes of you, then. In retrospect…speed is in the eye of the beholder.

The correct response would be…

Try playing as a Heavy for a bit, then go back. You should feel better about the game speed. If infact they do it off of body-type. If that does nothing for you then get a good bit of support and complain on here till they do something.
