Turtle and XP?

I haven’t played turtle for very long, only an hour or two, but he seems to be somewhat lacking in terms of XP. I don’t know the exact rate, but on average you only seem to get 1 or 2 XP for deflecting a shot.

Yes, I understand he’s an engineer who is supposed to complete objectives for XP. And I also understand his amazing weapon pool, which makes him a formidable assault merc.
But mercs like bush get 20 something XP if their turret even turns to face an enemy. Or mercs like nader, who get 20 splash damage XP, even if they deal barely any damage to the enemy.

For something as major as a shield, which can change the course of a match as much as a med station, shouldn’t he receive more XP for blocking shots?
A lot of the people I’ve seen play him seem to be placed disproportionately low for how much they’ve helped the team, when even a bad red eye can topscore just by looking at people.

When I played Turtle for a single 8v8 objective match to try it out, I got about 5-11 points of support experience when someone was actually being behind my shield and being shot at. I guess the exp is based on the weapon damage, so further away they shoot at it, the less experience you get? Also, no idea how close people need to be to it to get some experience.

I doubt it’s based on distance unless the weapon you’re using has a lot of falloff. Rather, actual damage makes more sense, as airstrikes can give you XP as well.

Seems pretty stupid that the most XP you get from it is when people walk behind and shoot the weak spot though. And even then it’s so negligible that you might as well use literally any other ability, since the thing is so easy to counter.

Except how would you know if shield was “blocking shots” protecting your team or enemy just decided to take the shield down by spamming bullets into it -> ton of free exp just for letting the shield die without being anyhow useful

Which is why I think getting XP for when the base is shot at or when it gets airstriked is stupid. Whether or not it’s actually blocking a shot, the shield is both wasting enemy ammo and drawing their attention away from something else they could be shooting at.
I understand your concern, but the amount of XP he currently gets for his only ability is so negligible I can’t see him being used much in the future.
After all, why would new players want to play someone with a lame shield and barely any XP, when you can play someone with mines, a turret, or even sticky bombs.

Besides, there should be a way to calculate whether or not the shot should have hit a player, and if so, award more XP, but I’m not a programmer.
