Trolls and Ranked Progression

Doubtless we have run into them. Trolls that just afk or teamkill in ranked, ruining everyone’s day.

I have a suggestion: How about we just make it so that matches where a person on a team gets consistent negative combat points or afks more than a certain amount of times to be autokicked and both teams who stay behind will get a draw automatically.

While some people may call this solution “abusable”, I’d say it removes a lot of headache. A match of 5v4 is already unfairly stacked to the other team’s favor, so their win in this match is underserved and should just end with a draw. This will give more pressure for the community to actually care about balance in ranked since both sides will feel the effects, rather than the winning 5 man team to simply laugh as they get a free win. This also will give less punishment to the 4 man team who was unfairly punished by being matched up with such a degenerate and the degenerate trolls in ranked will have less effect on the ranks of people.

I have had to deal with both of the above situations, and having to wait 10-30 minutes only to get dealt such a terrible hand is just stupid. There can be tweaks for the winning team to get the 50 and the losing to get the 30 if they were plagued with a troll. In such a way the “winners” get their win for their “skill”, and the losing team doesn’t get as affected by the troll with a draw on their mark.

But the current system is simple egregious with how trolls and possible hackers can ruin the ranking system. It can’t stay as is.

Or SD could properly punish players for doing this kind of thing.

Corrosion X trolled and threw games throughout Seasons 2 and 3, and it was only towards the end of Season 3 that he was punished, despite the fact that I and many others had reported him in-game, through support tickets, and DM’s directly to SD with footage attached to all, only to receive a “we’ll look into it” type response.

The worst part? Corrosion only got a 1 or 2 weeker. A week or so later he was back at it again with his “surrender or I afk” spam.

I believe the solution lies in a feature that I believe is/was in CS:GO at some point. The feature is as follows:

  • If a player(s) parties up with a player who is cheating, where sometime after the match has taken place, the cheater is banned, those who partied with them had the ELO that they gained from that match deducted from their overall rank.

I believe a similar concept can be applied to Dirty Bomb, where if a loss was at the fault of a troll, ELO could be returned to the players of that team if the player is convicted and banned for the act of trolling/throwing. Players found to be partied up with said player would not receive the same treatment.

Blacklisting isn’t the same fix I am suggesting. Blacklisting does not get you your ELO back and the damage has already been done. I’m advocating for a system that will reward people who try and punish those who ruin the experience of those who try.

A loss is a loss, regardless of what caused it. It shouldn’t be undone because someone on your team decided to start being a dick. The opposing team still put in the time and won, they should not be punished for this by having the match marked as a draw.

Otherwise the person doing this could even abuse it stating “I’m taking one for the team” and proceed to intentionally forfeit the match via being a douchebag, hoping that the match will be forced as a “Draw” for everyone, which is still better than a loss for his team.

People like this should be banned, and leavers should be temp banned… the more they leave the greater the temp ban. The game also needs to be cleared out of dumb bugs preventing you from being able to rejoin the match, or causing you to get a temp ban for no reason.

Aside from that the entry level for ranked is too low. Increase it, make sure people know how to play before actually trying ranked and you might see a reduction in how many people rage quit the game. (it won’t stop everyone though of course)

The increased entry level to ranked would also make it more difficult for banned trolls to make new accounts to continue trolling, as it would take longer.

Ranked should be used for serious players, who are looking to work together to actually win the match, not to win ranked points to spend on skins. Ranked skins has helped to populate ranked compared to where it once was, but its bringing in too many players who simply don’t care about the ranked experience and are only there for skins.

Once this games population greatly increases (hoping this is what will happen one day) they should make a separate ranked mode or alter the current ranked mode to focus more on getting to the top. The top players will receive rewards, and the rest… well thanks for playing.

Rewards could be given into tiers such as…

1st
2nd
3rd
4th~10th
11th~100th
101~1000th
1000th~ = consolation prize… a regular case… thanks for playing!

I know a lot of people like the ranked skins, which is fine… but they should just provide this type of content outside of ranked. If you want to play the game just to grind out skins and collectables, that’s cool… but don’t make ranked a place where this is the only place to obtain this content, or even a place to obtain it faster…

Ranked should be kept a place where people are striving to be competitive. To play hard, learn from mistakes and learn from others who are better than you… not rage quit because you are losing and aren’t going to get your full ranked points.

This is why I keep saying ranked increase and decrease needs to be calculated based on personal performance. It would solve so so many problems, but oh well…

And yes, this still needs saying, because losing matches while being the top of the team and having scores comparable to the enemy team feels mute when you only get ranked down for your efforts.

Give the winning team their normal amount, and the losing team doesn’t lose ranking.
