tris and terrain

(zl1corvette) #1

I have made a map that is mostly terrain. I have mountains seperating areas to try and keep my tris down, but in some spots it is up around 26k, The terrain is all detail, but I put some big brushes of caulk that are structual in the mountain. My problem is that I can still see most everything in the other ares w/ r_showtris 2. Do I need hint brushes? I am not really sure about them, I have read some stuff but still am confused. Can I just put hint brushes around my different areas to seperate them?

Ydnar has a nice picture explaining your very problem.

When making a hint brush you should texture only the face you want to cause a split with hint. Texture the remaing sides with skip.
