Trenches???

Any links to actual layouts of trenches and such? I honestly don’t understand how to create convincing trenches. After all, having trenches just to have trenches isn’t enough.

It’s hard to explain what I’m looking for. I honestly don’t understand the full purpose of trenches. I’d mainly like to know of a good source for information on trenches, as random Web searches haven’t been yielding too much. Taking a look at maps like mp_beach, I assume that trenches servered to allow access to areas below ground level. I just don’t understand their purpose in battle, exactly.
