I’ve yet to play Rhino for long as my team or the enemy team tend to have 3 on their side so I stick to Nader or Fragger to do some indirect damage, mostly for the exact reason of dealing with them.
Rhino isn’t a TF2 Heavy, and we sadly don’t have a medic with a beam to heal him constantly, its best to carry your shotgun while on the move and swap to your minigun when you’ve found a nice place to hunker down.
What @Gi.Am said is correct, Rhino is very situational and cant take a lot of damage if in the head, or longer ranges and flanking is a good tactic all around.
Its funny but I’ve see the complaining about him go both ways, mostly people complaining about him being useless or people complaining about him being OP because they ran down a short narrow hallway with him around the corner, minigun revving getting killed 5 times in a row when after the first you’d think being a Proxy attacking a rhino head on is like making a snowman in the desert, but no “RHINO OP, SPLASH DAMAGE NERF PLZ!” seems to be their battle cry, which when you read Rhino’s bio as to what his purpose is, seems like there is nothing wrong.
Rhino is perfect at holding down enemy approach routes, soaking up damage and suppressing multiple tangos. Advancing towards him directly is not recommended: his minigun isn’t the most accurate weapon, but it does a LOT of damage. He’s a slow but potent presence on the battlefield, forcing enemies to take cover or fall back. You can avoid him and take the long route round… but that’s what he wants you to do.
The only person I’ve seen talk smack was a player by the name of Dommafia, who annoyed even his own team over “taking his kills” and being the one bragging about his K/D R even though there is an Aura station next to him and the Aura themselves reviving him immediately just to not hear him yelling, doesn’t help that he chose to position himself too close too the enemy spawn thus doing little damage because of spawn shields. You know, THAT Dick.
As for the complaining about him being useless is even more annoying, You can say the same for every Fire Support who doesn’t notice the “AMMO!” in the screen or bullets over ones head. For every Medic that doesn’t notice you dead 2 inches away in a safe place where there’s no enemies to get shot by, medics that dont heal or even charge their paddles without “GET UP” in their loadouts.
Engineers who don’t even realize what their passive ability is.
Worse of all, due to there only being Vasilli, and while I can’t get headshots often and admit I cant shoot quickly like some others, I at least hit people and toss my heartbeat sensor, because I know they both help me support my team.
All I have to say is, people that bought a merc after or more often BEFORE the merc was put in free rotation will have used them more often and have the experience and knowledge of the mercs role, thus do well with them.
