to Steam, or not to Steam

(darthmob) #81
Last time i checked, physical copy of a game is just like any other physical property and can be sold.
I guess it depends. You don’t buy games nowadays; you buy a licence to play a game. DRM is most likely meant to be as much a measure against piracy as against selling used games.

… only to have failed big-time! Why should I buy a game in which I cannot do anything with it after I’m done with it ??
… only to have failed big-time! Why should I buy a game in which I cannot do anything with it after I’m done with it ??
Because you like to play games and there is no legal alternative?

(LyndonL) #84

Bazinga!

(shirosae) #85

There’s also not buying. Just sayin’.

(Wolfmeister) #86

Corrrect me if im wrong here but can you even sell PC games these days?

If id want to sell my UT3, BC2 or any of the MMO:s i don play anymore, how would i do that?
The first thing i had to do when i bought them was to sign up on Gamespy or EA etc.
if i sell those games i would have to give away my accounts to these sites too?

(LyndonL) #87

I guess with EB Games and other stores where they have TRADE IN games, it must be legal. And now that some companies are forcing people who have bought a previously owned game to pay an online play registration fee, it must be legal.

(DarkangelUK) #88

I only every see Previously Owned sections in game stores for console games, can’t say i’ve seen any 2nd hand PC game sections.

(Apprentice) #89

Then I’ll take the illegal alternative. In earlier mention case of Steam/Half-Life 2, best decission I ever made . . .

(murka) #90

Look for huge forums(mostly gaming/computer related). Most of them have some buy/sell section. If you are greedy, look for smaller sites with more isolated people who don’t know about cheaper offers and thus can even make profit(personal experience here).

(Voxie) #91

VAC (and I’d guess Steamwork) support confirmed.

Time to QQ, Steam haters.

Edit: Delicious sauce here.

(Senethro) #92

I didn’t want to be the first to post it as I’d be too smug.

(but lol)

(Senethro) #93

Serious question - is this Steam or Steamworks or what? I assume it’ll be full Steam because of VAC?

Also,

Its just a DRM solution and friend/community system. If you’ve played any other Online-Mostly game with a DRM solution but object to Steam because its Steam then you’re a hypocrite.

(Wolfmeister) #94

“We are not planning to be a Games for Windows Live title”
“As we’re a Steam game, we will be using VAC.”

Thats some very nice quotes to read on a Friday like this

Edit: But surely they must have got this info wrong?
"With a spring 2010 release, Brink can’t come soon enough. "

(LyndonL) #95

I wonder if there’ll be achievements. Always adds to the longevity of a game.

Conclusions might be drawn.
With steam you can get hell of some problems too… you can’t play the game without internet…

Like MW2! Sometimes my connection is lost to steam ( I have no idea why ) and I get the message ‘disconnected from steam’ and ****… can’t play any further!

Above that, some friends of me got like screwed over, there steam account is banned for fraude because they bought the games somewhere online etc and after that the company reported them… some weird story.

I prefer the old way… just a key code so I can play when I want without the dependence of steam.

About the security, well, whatever, if the game is only keycode (+dvd protected) it won’t make any difference between the steam stuff security.

Lots of illegal gamers on MW2 just play through iw.net online without steam…

This is such a stupid though by the game industry… they think idiot protections will help but after all always the fair gamers will get the problems… Fair gamers and messed up with steam… illegal gamers can play where and when they want!

I hope SD has some smart people unlike some other companies!

No for Steam only, that's silly. But yeah I wouldn't mind the game just having Steam support.

I have absolutely no use for Steam, as an alternative distribution method, it's great, but if it's required I'll just play something else.

I refuse allowing a third party dictate what I install on my computer, I allow punkbuster, because I can monitor what it reads and it doesn't affect my ability to use the software I own licenses for

I have multiple external hard drives, I can keep copies of all my game disks on 1 and always have access, if Steam validation servers go down (which has happened) I can still play, Steam players can't (in most cases)

sorry if that might offend some Steam fanpersons

See, my dream for Brink is that I will be able to buy the hard copy of Brink and attach it to steam. So I can use the in-game chat with my friends on Steam. But I don't want it to be Steam required...

And of course have the digital steam version too.

Steam ? what for ?
    no way, i hope.

i dont want my brink on steam. brink should already have a friends list, etc in the game for multiplayer. if it gets steam, it should be optional, and already have a friends list in-game

My main concern is about choices, I dont like to be forced to use this or this application to play a game, as nail mentionned, if steam is optional then fine by me, if its forced i wont buy brink, period.

      Peace

If they will use it no problem - but please don't make it you can't play the game without having a internet connection... that is just sucky....

Further, good find of this, however, it doesn't proof directly that they are going to use it
adieu, adios, arrivederci, auf wiedersehen, au revoir, bye, bye-bye, cheerio, good-by, goodby, good-bye, goodbye, good day, sayonara, so long… :stroggtapir:

The majority of people say no to steam, but it is great for multiplayer games TF2 for example. It is non-invasive and the least troublesome of all DRM. I don’t know why people think there’s not going to be a physical copy of the game, as you can preorder it from most game sites.
