To Fluffy : ET Loading Map is wrong

(Pog'S) #1

Please Fluffy, can you, in a future patch (if there is one) replace the loading map by a 1942 one.

You said in post http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2653 that ET was around 1942 but you loading map shows current Europe borders.

Furthermore, i suggest that either :

  • you make the loading map scaled down,
  • or you could make the pins and labels smaller
so that servers can hold more than 10 maps.

yes really, would be better!

I’ve come up with this map featuring :

  • roughly 1942 borderlines (when the Axis Empire was the largest)
  • larger scale that allows East Front maps to be created

I know it’s a bit empty yet but i plan to add montain info to fill it up.

Comments welcome to improve the map.
Maybe SD could add it in a future patch…

PS : Cities are added by hand so their locations are not 100% accurate.

Nice map! They should also take away the fighting that takes place in Sweden according to the loading screen (don’t remember which map it is)

(evillair) #5

The command map borders were divided, not by countries, but by terrain type.

From the help document from ET

The Map is color-coded by geographical zone, not national boundaries or historical affiliation. North Africa is sandy, Northern Europe is snowy and wet.

Anyway my map is larger and shows axis territory…

(Theisy) #7

But if you look at the map it has dotted lines to show the borders of countries

Hi there Pog’S,

Thanks for taking the time (and considerable trouble) to post on this matter. It’s great to see a player taking such an interest, and we’re kind flattered that folk think it’s important enough to discuss and not just moo at. :moo: Why did we use the map that we did? Well, primarily because it looked nice. No, seriously, it’s because we thought it represented the best compromise betwen accuracy and clarity.

We thought about just showing the territories by occupation/affiliation as your map does (although Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and Turkey were all neutral, not Allied, and strictly speaking should have their own colour), but decided against it. It’s not standard historical practice, and it isn’t terribly informative (since you end up not even knowing who’d been invaded by whom).

If ET was a more serious, historically accurate simulation of World War II, showing the ebb and flow of the grand campaigns, we’d probably have used a dynamic map showing both pre-war borders and military occupation changing over time, depending on the outcomes of the various battles. As many people have noticed, ET is not a serious war simulation :eek3:

Also, a dynamic campaign map would make it even more difficult for community mappers to create ET maps, and make ET out to be some sort of “Risk”-style strategy game, which, again, as several people currectly suspect, it isn’t. :eek2:

The map we used, we got from Nerve, and is actually pre-war, which is why it refers to the USSR and East Prussia and shows Czechoslovakia and Jugoslavia as single nations.

We then coloured the regions by geographical type. I know it looks like it’s some kind of “Risk”-esque geopolitical grouping, but the colours are really only there to tell you if the maps are Sandy, Grassy or Snowy.

So, it’s of the correct period and look, and tells you what kind of environment you’ll be fighting in. And Nerve gave it to us, so we kinda liked it anyway :moo:

Hope this helps clear things up, and sorry if you still don’t like it :uhoh:

Thanks again for posting :drink:

all of france was never captured by Nazis :), but i love that map

(Slippery Jim) #10

Pog you make some awesome maps.

How about using the Wolfenstein symbol on the map though? We all have an imagination and I think using Nazi symbols in a game just makes it trivial.

(Homer J) #11

And the UK was never captured by the US. :disgust: :disgust:

(Gabe(FIN)) #12

I would also like to point out that Finland was never totally occupied by nazis. We were allies with the germans in our own ways but they didn’t have much of a ruling over us. Actually we fought against them in late period of the war when they withdraw from Lapland and while doing that they practicully burned the place down :frowning:

And the southern parts of Finland were never occupied by German army. Actually what German army did was support us against Russia. But I won’t go in detail about that, because that’s totally different story(altought I might want to point out that Russia was attacking on us not the other way around).

(Pog'S) #13

OK guys i explain myself :

I added a US flag as Allies Symbol. To me US Forces are massively supporting British, having bases all over Britain.
Marocoo is part of free France as colony and i know, being french, that south of France was not taken over by Germany but it still was occupied.
I just wanted to show where allies forces were and Axis empire was. I too don’t pretend to show absolute verity in my map. I just think that it is more important to show were forces are than type of terrain. I guess that mappers are smart enough to figure out that Norway is not sandy and North Africa not snowy. Sorry Bongoboy

The brown parts do not represent allied forces but non occupied by axis lands. This can be neutral like Switzerland or Spain. Neutral colour would be not good too as Belgium, which was neutral was nonetheless invaded by Germans.

I agree that the swastika can hurt people, so i can repalce it by the RTCW symbol or place a iron cross.

I agree there is no way to perfectly represent Europe from 1942 to 1944 on a signle map but i think it teaches people to show how large the Axis Empire was in 1942.
I now understand why you made the map like this and respect it.

But the problem of small scale remains, making difficult to have a server that holds a lot of maps.
The scale of my map allows to include East Front maps, which is a good point. I know that it would be Americans versus Germans but that’s better than nothing.

Map updated taking into account your comments :

To replace the 64x64 pin icons, i suggest 32x32 icons such as below :

They would take less place the actual icons.

But it remains the labels wich take lots of place. I don’t know how to reduce them…
