Tips of trees are black

(TFate) #1

Hey people.

I’m working on a forest map… as you can imagine this means lots of trees. Originally I was using misc_models for the trees and the result looked great but the compile times quickly got out of hand until it reached the point where the map was not compiling at all. Now I’ve switched over to misc_gamemodels, but the problem is that all of my trees have dark tips. It’s a real eyesore. Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be fixed, or has anyone had experience with this problem and how you avoided it?

Help is appreciated.

um i would recomend that you go back to misc_moddels

gamemodels have some more effects than just an alterantive to being a moddel in the game, they increase the ammount of data that has to be sent to the client

for testing your map try not to use the light compiles just the bsp -vis then it wont waste time working out lighting

and for a final compile (with light) the longer it takes the sweeter your map will look (most of the time)

Yes, but it got to the point where the light compile simply stopped working (talking hundreds of trees). I suppose if I find no solution I will simply cut back drastically on the amount of trees…

what kind of fps do you get with soooooo many trees ?

(Schaffer) #5

If your adding trees into areas outside the playable world then maybe you could get away with making this a texture and dropping out some models. This gets done quite a bit. Menzel did this for Battle of the Bulge and works quite well (I think)

well just do the final compile with light then and leave it for a few days

you can always test othet things with light in another map
