Tips for new players from a veteran player.

(Morty) #1

Hello all,

I have been playing Dirty Bomb for a year now. I have earlier experience from Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.

Lets start with the basics.

Mouse sensitivity (!! Caution, when changing mouse settings you need time to adapt and it can temporarily hinder your aim. !!)

You should find most optimized mouse settings for yourself. Dirty Bomb is a fast paced game that requires lots of headshots and good tracking. You should have high enough sensitivity to move around but still low for getting those headshots.

I recommend you to get as low sensitivity as possible, but so that you can still effeciently move around.

I know myself, I could get better aim if I would lower my sensitivity, but I would sacrifice too much of my mobility.

Config

Graphics

This game is beautiful with high graphics, but unfortunately all of us dont have computers good enough to run with stable high fps. Also this game has not been fully optimized yet.

You want to have stable and fluid gameplay. I use custom config that puts all settings to low and locks FPS to 120. This way I have pretty much always stable 120 FPS.

You don’t want any lag or twitching when you are tracking enemy heads. I can upload my config if someone is interested.

Remember to backup your old config before replacing it with this. Also ensure that CFG file is read only after changes.

Interface

Crosshair

I have tried different crosshairs and have come to a conclusion that plain Dot is the best (Medium size for me). When using Dirty Bombs default crosshair you tend to aim more for body than head. Your overall accuracy may be better when aiming body, but when you face a veteran that aims for head, you have no chance.

When having dot, it is easier (with practice) to keep tracking heads. Your dot should be as small as possible, but big enough that you dont lose sight of it in firefights.

Iron Sight

In Dirty Bomb you should not use much Iron Sight. Only when aiming really far or for some classes that benefits from it (Arty Etc).

Why not to use it? You’r field of view gets smaller, you dont see what happens around you. And worst of all you get really slow and when you get slow or stop moving in Dirty Bomb, you are dead.

Disruptive features

In default config you have these Disruptive features enabled and they should be disabled for better gameplay.

Blood splatter - Your screen gets red when you have lost HP, this makes it harder for you to focus and keep tracking in duels.

Head bob, Arms momentum - In default CFG you have these on. They may give realistic feel but in the end they only disturb your aim.

Weapon Reloading - You can cancel weapon reloading by sprinting. If you have half magazine left and you are reloading while enemy appears, you can simply sprint to stop reloading and finish enemy off with bullets you have left.

Useful features

Hitsounds - These should be enabled. Also you can count from sound how many hits you have made and you can guess enemy HP.

Hit indicator - With hit indicator you can see if enemy takes damage behind the corner from granades or explosives.

Movement

In duels you should be strafing from side to side, throw couple of crouches in there to evade those nasty headshots intended for you.

When shooting for mid/long range, you should remember to use crouching when possible. It will decrease your weapon spread.

Best classes for competitive plays in current Meta (IMO):

1.) Fragger. (M4A1)

After lots of nerfs Fraggers granades still are the best ability in the game. You can take down whole team into full respawn with your Gibbing granades. Best duelist with 150HP, you can win your duels easily and punish enemy team from rear or flank.

2.) Skyhammer (M4A1)

You can clear chokepoints and blast full team of enemies with your precise airstrikes.
You can also destroy EV with a single airstrike.
Best gibber with “unlimited” ammo.

3.) Sawbonez (Crotzni)

You can be the killer medic engineer.

Fastest killer in duels when shooting in head.
Fast health recovery after or mid duel. (self heal)
With CR73 Card, you have engineering +20%, Get up 50% heath when revived, Potent packs +20% from health packs.

4.) Aura (Blishlok)

Best defensive medic.

Healthstation is good to hold chokepoints.
Fast movement speed, can run and ress people quickly.

Weapon recoil and spread patterns

FOV (Field of view)

This is more of a point of preferences, I have been using low Fov over 10 years, some quake and ET players used to favorite higher FOV. Beware that changing FOV makes mouse sensitivity and gameplay feel different and requires time to get used to.

You can adjust Fov from 65 to 100 at ingame Video settings. I use FOV 65.

When playing with low FOV, it feels like everything is zoomed and slowed down. This makes shooting long distances alot easier and you dont have to rely on iron sight as you should not be using it much in this game.

For me it also makes easier to track because head and overall playermodel is larger. The disadvantage with this is that you wont see your surroundings as well and it may feel really clumsy at the beginning.

Benefits of low FOV.

  • Larger Character Models

  • More accurate shooting at long ranges without iron sight.

  • More accurate Headshot accuracy (IMO)

  • Better FPS (Slightly)

Benefits of High FOV.

  • Easier to move around.

  • See more what happens around you.

  • More accurate Bodyshots and tracking. Especially with shotguns.

Here is my gameplay videos without commentary.

You can watch it and take tips. Also it shows my config and mouse sensitivity.

Also here is my fragmovies for that extra motivation.

Feel free to ask if you are interested on knowing more.

Best Regards,
Morty

Good stuff! Thanks for the tips and videos

hey there thanks firstly for your great video. in an other guide video was saying changing fov to %100. do you also agree this to get better aim?

(omnipotentCabbage) #4

I would like to know your config

(Morty) #5

Updated guide with link to CFG and my opinions about fov. Also added couple of sections and videos. I think you need to test what fov works for you the best, they both have ups and downs.

[center]Thank you for this darling
I started out with Aura (Always loved being a support)
Now jumping ship to Sparks. Will need some time to re-adjust though
Thank you again x

For Duels i would also mention the double and triple jump. This makes Aura/Proxy especially deadly in tight spaces. Better chance of more pellets hitting the head from shotguns.

And always try to gib/finish off your kills and any others you happen to see laying around. Nothing worse than having a Sparks revive someone behind your lines.

With what settings do you lock your FPS to 120?

(Morty) #9

Put these to your config.

MinSmoothedFrameRate=5
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=120
