Timed Out - Sick of this

(M0TiF) #1

WHen I am trying to join an empty server or servers with empty slots,

it first says “Joining Session” and then “Timed out” - Was able to play without problems yesterday, now I am having this.

No, I didn’t change anything in my modem/ADSL settings.

It feels like I am a BETA Tester of this game every single day… :penguin:

Yes, I have the same problem.
I can play other games fine. But Brink is not letting me connect to the gameservers at certain times. :frowning:

Often, when I time out trying to connect to a server, if I immediately try to reconnect to the same server I’m able to join.

if nothing else helps, try rebooting your pc.

(V1s0r) #5

This has nothing to do with rebooting a PC or router.
There is something wrong at certain times when trying to play Brink. For example I can play at day, but not at night on the same server.
I can ping the server just fine, but cannot connect. But what does seem to work is joining a friend who is already on the server.
What is different by joining a friend, then connecting direct to the server?

Is there something wrong with Steam towards Brink or vice versa?

The same with the serverbrowser in the game. I had set filters to remove empty servers and it was working fine and all of a sudden I have to change filters, removing the player count filter to even get servers.

Maybe the timeout limit is longer for directly joining a game that a friend is in as opposed to joining a server from the server list?

This is a server issue. Contact server admin.

I have that always in some specific servers, and a lot of servers with 13/16 14/16 and 15/16 but those i suspect have reserved slots, but ye that can be really annoyng.

I get this on certain servers as well. I’ve looked at the console and just see numerous sending getinfo and then it finally times out.

(Apocalypse_Pony) #10

I came to that conclusion, as well. Both about the reserved slots and it being annoying.

It’s most likely to do with servers having reserved slots, if so it’s an issue that plenty of games have.

It’s probably one of the following:

  • The game tells the Client there is a free slot but the third-party plugin running on the server has reserved the nth slot and will not permit incoming connection attempts except from designated players.

  • The game tells the Client there is a free slot but the third-party plugin running on the server has reserved the nth slot and will permit incoming connection attempts from anyone. If a designated player attempts to connect to the server, and it is full, a player who is not registered for a reserve slot will be kicked.

  • The game tells the Client there is a free slot but the third-party plugin running on the server has reserved the nth slot and will permit incoming connection attempts from anyone. There is a free slot when you attempt to connect, but at busy periods another player who has rights to the reserved slot begins connecting just after you. When server resolves both connection attempts it cancels your connection attempt in favour of the other player, or it simply fills the slot without cancelling your connection attempt and you eventually time out.

Helpful server admins will usually advertise this reserved slot functionality with in-game pop-up messages or on the server name/description. This would also explain why people get ‘randomly disconnected’. I am investigating the case where connection attempts succeed via Friends when direct connects fail.

If you give me the IP of the servers you’re having trouble connecting to I can verify these suspicions, but I’ve not observed the problem for anything other than reserved slots so far.

(General_Zod) #12

It sounds like it may be reserved slots, however this server right now has 9/16 players but yet keep getting sending getinfo and then it times out.

I have the same/similar problem some times and I don’t think it has anything to do with reserved slots…

In the in-game server browser there are sometimes 2 or 3 servers that seem to have people playing on them but when I try to join and I get the “timed out” error.
If I then go to the Steam server browser, I can see that the servers that I timed out on are populated by bots only.

Its super annoying when 2 of the 3 servers that show up in the browser are timeoutbotservers. Its super annoying that you can’t see who is playing on the server from the in-game browser.

It honestly makes me sad when I think about how bad Brink’s in-game server browser is. Especially when you consider the fact that ETQW’s server browser was easily the best of any FPS game to date.
