This will be controversial.

Can you clarify? If lemming rushing is effective, and XP should be rewarded to effective things, then you’re saying lemming rushing should get rewarded with XP?

Are we breaking this down to context as well? There isn’t any great emphasis on killing when it comes to XP, but stopping the enemy from disarming your bomb requires them to be dead, therefore killing is the most effective action at that point of the game, but isn’t rewarded with XP. That goes against the rule of the most effective things are rewarded with XP.

Yes I do say that. Reward what is effective, not what is ‘fun’. The ‘fun’ should be balanced in the game itself. In ETQW and WET healing yourself was very effective, you didn’t get the xp but it kept you on your feet and thus solo-playing rambo medics were effective.

Brink did away with that, not by xp-incentives, but by making self-buffing/healing very costly compared to team work.

Such implementations can work for lemming rushes as well. There are already such measures as lemmings feed the defenders with interrogation victims.

Should that then also translate to killing being rewarded with XP as well? (or more emphasis rather than less, which SD seems to have done)

(tokamak) #184

Yeah preferably with added context like class and approximation to relevant (sub)objectives.

SD’s reasoning seems to be that because players kill anyway it needs to be rewarded less. Which seems to reward other things than effectiveness which I consider wrong.

"thus solo-playing rambo medics were effective. "

effective as what ?
they don’t heal team mates or revive, spam “I need ammo” right out of spawn and generally don’t contribute anything towards winning match

(tokamak) #186

Powerful then, that’s not the point, I’m sure there are other examples of things that are unintentionally effective but not the way you want to see people play. What I’m trying to say is that these things need to be fixed within the game and not the overlying xp distribution.

I disagree with most of what you said.

Especially the “get the pc version” reply for customization of private matches. Spoken like someone who has no experience playing on console. There have been many games with extreme customization of private matches. Halo comes to mind…it’s a pretty popular game because of it. You can even customize things like gravity lol. Like it or not the console version will sell about 100 times more than the PC version so why gimp the console version?

Your comment about splash damage games? I played W:ET and ETQW. W:ET was awesome. ETQW was not. It’s not like they are perfect so no I will not just assume that the movement and shooting is smooth. I still want to see how long it takes to down someone. Some of the vids make it look like you can be downed way to quick but I won’t be sure until I play it myself. We will see I guess.

Your assumption that “high level” cod players won’t like Brink is wrong imo. There are some good COD players that do play as a team and are highly skilled. Some old RTCW players that I used to play with are really good at that game and I’m sure they will like Brink and adjust to the gameplay just fine. Besides you totally missed my point about matchmaking. The only reason I brought it up was because imo from what I know about the leveling system in Brink it won’t pit good players against good players and bad players against bad players which will result in inconsistent online matches through matchmaking and no I will not get the PC version so this is relevant to me and the hopefully millions that will buy this game so you can’t just dismiss it.

As far as better shooters winning most of the time over bad shooters? I guess we will have to agree to disagree. More often than not good shooters are also good team players and know how to play the game. The lone wolves are usually few but they really stand out because it only takes that 1 guy to ruin the game. So I stand by my statement that a team of good skilled shooters will beat a team with subpar shooters regardless of teamwork. Teamwork will however make all the difference between 2 evenly matched teams (2 teams of equal skill in shooting). This however won’t happen frequently enough in matchmaking games. It looks like on console if you want good matches consistently the only way to do it will be in private matches.
