This is a direct nerf to all the Mercs

Melee Weapons

Added a turn-speed-limit for melee attacks to prevent exploits and to reward initial aim

Phantom didn’t need this, no other merc needed this.

This mechanic literally turns melee into a liability rather than a go all in or nothing tactic in a fight. The game is too fast paced to aim properly with melee weapons and the ability to actually turn during the time that one Skyhammer jumps away as you’re about to knife him as Kira, and you continuously aiming for him would mean either victory or defeat, but now they don’t even have to jump anymore, they just have to turn a bit to the side and by a bit I LITERALLY MEAN A BIT.

Why was this even considered? I never saw a game in which melee was actually so nerfed.

I’m not crying about Phantom, I’m crying about the melee system being completely broken right now and utterly pointless, no one is gonna try to melee anymore considering the fact that more than often it will be a sure loss for the knife wielder.

I agree, they just needed to tune down the Katana’s lunge animation.

(frolicsomeCrane) #3

Thing is they did that, and then they proceeded to nerf EVERYONE for some reason that baffles me.

Oh god, this is Carb9 all over again. SD, why are you so prone to shooting yourself in the foot? Don’t you remember what Brink turned out after your decided to make every gun shit in Brink, by nerfing the only viable one? Don’t you remember RECENT backslash that you tried to somewhat fix in THIS very patch with aim-punch? Who on earth comes up with ideas of nerfing EVERYTHING else because of problems which are not even related to that?

If there’s one single person who keeps coming up with ideas like “hey let’s nerf everyting else to make this single thing viable” then he should be fired. I’m not exaggerating. Go read forums, go read reddit, /dbg/ or steam posts — people don’t like how you come up with fixing stuff. If there’s person responsible to that, then he clearly has no idea about how to cater to your players / customers.

Let’s look into recent changes with the game. What have you done? You drastically increased aimpunch. Why? Because perk that was intended to reduce it didn’t work as intended. That’s plainly retarded. Re-tar-ded.

You released a merc that even on paper seemesed to be broken. You gave him acces to the best SMGs in the game and the best melee weapon. You also gave him stealth and way to survive anything as long as you have as much as 1% energy bar, even if it’s a bloody nuke. Ok, you dun goofed. How have you fixed it? By making EVERY other merc’s melee weapons a piece of dump. By nerfing his two best SMGs that are non-exclusive to him. You made many other mercs less good because of a fact that Phantoms two most popular cards had them in their loadout. Don’t call it a coincidence, I wouldn’t belive in it.

And yes, I’m mad. I was always a huge fan of SD, I always defended Brink, — go read my reddit history, I couldn’t skip a single thread when people were bashing Brink on the head — I felt like it was an honest mistake on their part, nothing malicious. They tried, they failed, better luck next time, I enjoyed game for what it was. But now, now I clearly see a sodding pattern in all this. It’s either ignorance or plain stupidity and lack of skills of being a game designer on part of people who implemented recent changes. I don’t have sympathy for neither of them.

The reason why it was considered.
Have you tested how much of an impact this actually has? From my gameplay it doesn’t seem to change that much. It just means you aren’t able to go beyblade mode.

While I do agree that the Beyblade Phantom was pants on head retarded, I DON’T condone taking away a player’s control over his character and turning him literally into a raging bull set on a target.

Beyblade was shot down with this:

Katana - Secondary attacks now deal damage for a shorter period of time

Melee is needed as a tactical and strategical weapon, they literally removed every melee weapon from the game with this. ON EVERY MERC. There’s literally no point in using them.

And, just because you were not using melee weapons doesn’t mean that others weren’t. I personally was running crazy as a Kira with BR and Chopper. Now that’s gone.

They completely destroyed a playing style.

I haven’t played enough with melee sofar to say wether it is too strong in the current state. But I 'd like to point out.
They already stated that they will tweak this new mechanic (in the patchnotes non the less). The exploit that this fixed was technical possible on all melee weapons the Katana and Phantoms backstabbing playstyle simply made people investigate why it was so strong uncovering that exploit. Fixing it for the katana only, would have meant that we would have seen it on the cricket bat next.

Melee is in direct competition with other means of killing i.e shooting people. It could very well be that they looked at their stats and saw a bit too much proxy/aura melee flanking compared to ranged kills (the game is still a shooter after all). And running into people with a cricket bat was undeniable pretty strong.

Granted they might have nerfed melee too much to 100% ensure that it can’t be exploited anymore. If so we will most certainly see a small incremental increase over the next couple patches.

I don’t understand why melee needs an increment, taking away a player’s control over the game is NOT a good way to make a game. The increment is disgusting to the feel and it literally screws with your actual gun aiming.

Your sensitivity goes down so much that you can’t even handle it, it makes you feel sick.

I see both sides of this argument. I think the limited turn speed has its place, but it should be subtle - something that will only really cap you if you’re running with a stupid mouse sensitivity or using a macro like the above spin2win. I have noticed a decrease in responsiveness to the melee with this patch, and considering that I am by no means good at tracking a target to begin with, this is surprising to me.

I just don’t want to see low-end games turn into Chivalry again, preferably without sacrificing melee functionality for the other mercs. As long as Phantom is adequately discouraged from a berserker playstyle, I don’t mind how strong or weak the rest of his kit is, but I would rather get there without gimping my ability to jog up behind people and stick them but good. It’s embarrassing when your perfect backstab is foiled because your victim unwittingly shuffled to the left to line up a better shot.

Edit for clarity: I am not a Phantom player, I do not have him and neither do I have any plans to get him - I actually have the credits right now and a silver loadout card for him if I really wanted to (cases are fickle :/), but I’d rather wait and see what comes out next. My reference to backstabbing above comes from my tendency to run with stiletto+chopper and use that for taking down snipers, since I am utterly terrible at landing a second shot on absolutely anything.
