Thinking of getting this game for PC

(enigmajk) #1

I have been reading threads about why people like or dislike the game as it is currently. And before reading any of those threads I was planning on picking up this game. Now, I realize opinions are just that, and I shouldnt let that keep me from enjoying a potentially great game. But it makes me think twice before handing over my $50.

Now, I really enjoy class based team oriented games, I have invested countless hours into Enemy Territory and Team Fortress 2 and both offered what seemed like endless hours of entertainment. Brink seems so similar and I thought this game would be a no brainer to go out and buy. But, the community and opinions of players generally seem to dislike this game.

With the above said what does everyone think? Is this game worth my time? Please post your reason why as it is greatly appreciated.

I’d say give it a few more weeks, then decide.
Atm it still has a few things that need fine tuning.

I think you should wait also and/or try to find it for less money (steam, d2d and some other places offer it for less at times. i payed 37dollars for example).

It’s certainly fun. If you’re expecting it to be like ETQW, and ET, then prepared to be a bit disappointed. It offers a wide varierty of ways to play the game, weapons, abilities, 4 classes, and the 3 body types which relate, in a way, to the weapons, as far as which you can wield.

On the other hand, Brink is missing some of the social interactions that made ET and ETQW great, I.E, they’ve obfuscated VOIP so that it is not on by default. You run through players, and cannot push them, like in ET(I’m pretty sure you could push a short distance in ET;QW early on until it was removed) You can’t chat after a map very easily.

Other than that, there’s a lot of nonsense whining about silly things, like weapons balance. People trying to use the assault rifles at close range are, apparently super confused as to why the other, lighter SMGs keep cutting them down. There’s also a lot of nonsense about players wanting CTF, TDM, and FFA, though those gametypes were specifically avoided.

Anyhooo, Brink is fun, but I don’t think it has the replayability of ETQW, or W:ET, but that’s because of a lack of SDK/lack of vehicles, I think..

Don’t. It’s a buggy, imbalanced console port and the playerbase is rapidly shrinking. It will be on sale in a few weeks

I think I will wait a few weeks hopefully I can find it for a cheaper price by then if im lucky. Maybe it will have a little more content which it seems to lack right now as stated above. Its sometimes hard to resist buying a game first thing when it comes out, especially when its right up your alley. But this one will have to wait.

Thank you for all of the helpful replies.

I am having a blast with Brink and love team style play. Brink reminds me of the old days when Gears of War 1 first came out. I play on xbox though, so can’t tell you if you should get it for PC. Based on your comments, you will like it if you like Team Fortress and completing objectives. Go with your gut.

If you played previous ET games you owe it to yourself to get this one.

You will probably be very disappointed. This game is NOWHERE near the quality and fun level of TF2. NOWHERE!

I disagree. TF2 pidgeon holes you into roles where you have one weapon, and 1 or two abilities. It is incredibly boring and simplistic. If you are a heavy, you have a minigun and a shotty. If you are an engineer, you have turrets, a shotty, and a pistol. If you are a scout, you run fast, have a pistol, a bat, and a shotty.

And the characters all have personalities for you. The most boring shooter I have ever had the misfortune of buying. Oh, wait. It has hats.

No.

For what it is worth, I really didn’t enjoy TF2 for the reasons you describe. Very shallow gameplay.

Brink makes up for it, MASSIVE character choices. Get it.

I like it on the PC but as alot of ppl have said and will keep saying “give the game a few weeks, let splash iron out the kinks” etc etc.

It’s a game that can provide alot of fun and amusement but you must remember its a new game, its not based on any other game which is why alot of ppl were disappointed, its not COD and its not ET. It is however and entirely different animal and should be treated as such.

I myself followed this game from the first video i saw, i fell in love with the parkour SMART system and focsed solely on that, this could be the reason why i was considerably less disappointed than other ppl as i did’nt compare it to other games. it may share similarities with mirrors edge movement, call of duty speed and battlefield/ET style team play but you cant expect it to be anything like those as its all of those and none of them at the same time.

Just make sure you pc is upto scratch and give it a try, i advise finding a friend with the PC version and borrowing his/her steam account.

Hope to see you on the battlefield once SD bring out the new patches and DLC later down the road.

So you think that classes should be indistinct from each other and lack personality? That makes no sense to me. I guess I’ll never understand you Brink Defense Force folk.

And yes, the hats were absolutely stupid. I stopped playing when that mess came about, which is why I’m so angry that I got ripped off of $50 with Brink because I haven’t been playing any shooters since then and I would very much so like to play a new one.

It’s because I want to love this game so much that I’m so effing pissed off with it and its developers.

Uhhh, players have to have their own personality in Brink because theres no real comedy to it. The humor comes from the interactions, rather than gimmicky sounds or facial expressions, that are admittedly humorous.

Those social types of interactions (I.E, the ability to shove players in Wolf:ET or dropkick in NoQuarter) allow the game to be far more interesting and diverse.

The classes actually are pretty distinct from eachother, because they all have distinct abilities that you can develop. Unforunately, the abilities themselves do not improve, but they are all different per class.

For me, TF2 is not a 10th as enjoyable as Quake(any), Brink, ET, or ETQW.
